Amplitude only direction of arrival estimation. Our colleagues Dr Muhammad Ali Babar Abbasi, Prof Vincent Fusco, and peers Dr Gabriel Gonçalves Machado and Dr KD M Raziul Islam presented last November a novel and straightforward hardware concept for the estimation of the #direction-of-arrival (DoA)of #electromagnetic signals. By strategically tilting two patch #antenna arrays shown below, they established a robust correlation between DoA and the variance in the received power collected at the SMA outputs. This novel approach simplifies #hardware and digital #signalprocessing (DSP), eliminating the need for phase comparison, a common complexity in conventional setups. Their approach is frequency-agnostic, and they performed a proof-of-concept using numerical simulations with an effectiveness study in the X-Band. A deliberate mismatching of polarizations through antenna tilt resulted in each array capturing distinct power levels from EM waves arriving from specific directions in the yz-plane. They could demonstrate that by maintaining the same boresight direction but tilting the #beam in relation to the #propagation axis, DoA estimation through #power difference can be achieved. Their proposed technique aims to reduce the complexity of such estimation systems in the hardware, as well as in the DSP domain, by removing the need for phase comparison. These exciting advancements emerge from a collaborative #research between our Centre for Wireless Innovation (CWI) | Queen's University Belfast and the School of Engineering at Ulster University. NEOROTEC's principal investigators have contributed to a new review article "Roadmap to #neuromorphic computing with emerging technologies" in APL Materials (https://lnkd.in/efFAnhE4). The article highlights the urgent need for greater energy efficiency in artificial intelligence and argues that neuromorphic computing is a potential solution to this challenge. It brings together experts in materials science, device and circuit design, system design, and algorithm and software development to collectively contribute to the advancing field of neuromorphic engineering and computing. The long list of honorary authors in the field of neuromorphic computing includes five members of the Peter Grünberg Institut (PGI) at Forschungszentrum Jülich: Regina Dittmann, John Paul Strachan, Ilia Valov, Rainer Waser and Stefan Wiefels.

I want to share our recent work accepted at the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing on designing computational optical imaging systems, mainly in coded-aperture-based architectures. Here, instead of doing end-to-end training of the optical system and the recovery network, we employ knowledge distillation criteria to design the coded apertures and the recovery network. In this case, the teacher network is a system with few constraints (high number of snapshots and real-valued coded apertures) which allows high recovery performance but it is infeasible to implement in real prototypes. This simulated, high-performance system guides the optimization of a student system with high constraints (few snapshots, binary coded apertures). The guidance is based on modifying the student's loss function, by matching the features of the recovery network (an unrolling network) of the student to the teacher's features and their outputs. This approach significantly improves the recovery performance of the student compared with common end-to-end training for a single-pixel system.
