This is all connected to the issues that became the core essence for the National Consortium of Academic Nurse Educators (NC-ANE) to organize and address the systemic issue of the nursing shortage and the causes that lead to it. In our research, many factors are interconnected, poor working conditions, lack of post-graduation follow-up or mentoring, short staffing, bullying, the lack of teamwork among unit staff with various types of nurses (per diem, agency, travel nurses, float pool, etc.), more complex patient morbidities, etc. The basic factor that NC-ANE is working on is the collaborative and multi-faceted approach to this nursing shortage. We are rallying academic institutions, healthcare organizations, professional organizations, policymakers, and the consumers of healthcare to come together to address this ANE shortage. In 2025, more full time faculty will retire. Meanwhile we have less and less students pursuing PhDs and MS Nursing Education who are the experts in teaching nursing students because of their specialized knowledge, skills, pedagogical expertise and other educational courses that are germane to ANEs. Academic institutions rely heavily on adjuncts who have primary jobs; clinical faculty in healthcare organizations (HCOs) are supposed to follow up new grads but are so insufficient in number that new grads are assigned to unit nurses (adding to the unit nurse’s workload); or, clinical educators who are pulled to do other roles other than providing the additional or extended orientation to these new nurses. HCOs have limited time and slots to offer to students for actual clinical placements. ANEs are not looked upon in the same level as other nurse specializations, leading to lower wages and less nurses attracted to it; the lack of policy to elevate the important role of ANEs relative to the quality education and socialization of nurses into the profession; and, the lack of understanding by consumers of healthcare as to why there is this perennial lack of nurses when schools graduate many nurses year in and year out. If you wish to help resolve this interrelatedness of the nursing crisis to the lack of ANEs, join us in our mission to elevate the plight of ANEs through advocacy and research in order to influence a collaborative approach to address this, rather than our usual strategy of addressing only one aspect of the nursing shortage, the rapid attrition away from nursing of new nurses, and the lack of preparation of new nursing graduates in dealing with the realities of the profession. For more info and to join NC-ANE, send your queries to info@nc-ane.org.

New nurses feel like nursing school didn't prepare them for the real world. How do we fix this? I talked to my daughter this weekend about her friend who just started her first nursing job in August of last year. I asked how she liked her job and being a nurse. My daughter said, "She just feels like nursing school didn't prepare her for all the problems she has to deal with, like short-staffed shifts, rude coworkers, and dealing with unit politics. She doesn't think she'll do bedside nursing for very long." I asked if she had anyone she could talk to about how she's feeling who really understands. My daughter said she talks to other new nurses on her unit. I offered to be that safe space for her. We are failing our new nurses in so many ways. Lack of support and mentorship adds to the stress and further opens the door labeled "Exit," not only from the bedside but also from the profession. We need a safe space for nurses to go where they can get the support and mentorship they need. #nursingshortage #nursingcrisis #nursing #nurses #nursesonlinkedin #healthcareonlinkedin #mentorship

Nursing is more than a job. It's a calling and an ongoing commitment to learn and serve others with love. 💚 According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN): 👉 Nursing is the nation's largest healthcare profession, with nearly 4.7 million registered nurses (RNs) nationwide. 📈 The federal government projects that more than 200,000 new registered nurse positions will be created each year from now until 2031. 🤝 Nurses comprise the largest component of the healthcare workforce, are the primary providers of hospital patient care, and deliver most of the nation's long-term care. Did you know that HU was voted the #1 school in nursing for the state of Indiana, by our students? And that the program has a 100% job placement rate for the healthcare industry? We'd love to help future caretakers identify if they're being called to serve in the field.
