Please join me this Tuesday, April 16, 2024, in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Omni International Airlines Safety Symposium where I have been invited to speak on the aviation industry's need for more proactive and predictive safety risk management strategies as we move into the future. My message will be simple. Specifically, in today's dynamic world of aviation, safety risk management on the part of all industry stakeholders goes far beyond being a mere corporate priority. It is now the cornerstone of our industry and the essence of its commitment to the flying public. We will look at some historical events where strategic risk management principles and change management considerations were not appropriately addressed. Industry examples of where "group think", "political agendas", and "commercial considerations" outweighed the legitimate safety concerns of front-line experts. I will strongly advocate a collective and comprehensive approach to risk management where potential issues are identified and mitigated before they can impact safety. We will highlight the criticality of having an organizational safety culture which not only "tolerates", but "endorses" a corporate mantra of "challenge and question" from all stakeholders on decisions affecting operational safety. Lastly, I hope to make the importance of supporting our own internal safety professionals whose relentless efforts and forward-thinking strategies represent the key drivers of ensuring the continued safety performance of our industry abundantly clear. I would ask that those in attendance at the Symposium engage with us, the presenters and panelists, by challenging and questioning the material presented and the diverse positions taken on the future of aviation safety management. It is only if we collectively "Look Down the Road, and Around the Corner(s)" can we truly ensure that our aviation safety record remains the best in the industry! See you there! #AirlineSafety #ProactiveSafety #SafetyFirst #AviationSafety #RiskManagement #SafeSkies #FlightSafety #SafetyInFlight #SafetyLeadership #TravelSafe #omniinternationalairlines

Safety Risk Management - is this a topic that bores or excites you? For many, it might not be at the top of their list for enthralling subjects. However, in the aviation industry, it's not just an interesting topic, it is essential. Every day, thousands of passengers entrust their lives to the meticulous and well-oiled mechanism of airport operations. As an airport safety trainer and consultant, I can unequivocally say that fostering a robust safety culture and ensuring compliance should be our utmost priority. Not only does it save lives, but it also builds trust and confidence in the aviation sector. When done well, safety risk management can be a fascinating realm of continuous learning, strategic thinking, and collaboration. It's the engine that keeps our airports safe and efficient. It's a task that requires dedication and vigilance - because in our line of work, there's no room for lapses. When is the last time you reviewed your organization's hazard register and safety risk profile? Hazards and their associated risks change over time. Be sure to have an accurate picture of risk so that appropriate steps can be taken to minimize the potential impacts. Stay tuned for more insights and discussions on airport safety, aviation technology, and risk management. Let's keep our airports safe and our passengers secure - that's the thrill of working in aviation safety. #aviationsafety #riskmanagement #airportsecurity

Is combining the roles of an AVSEC Manager and a Safety Manager within the Aviation Industry, a good practice? Combining the roles of an AVSEC (Aviation Security) Manager and a Safety Manager within the aviation industry can have both advantages and challenges. Let’s explore: 1. Advantages: 1.1. Holistic Approach: Having one manager responsible for both security and safety ensures a holistic approach to risk management. They can integrate security and safety practices effectively. 1.2. Synergy: Overlapping responsibilities allow for synergy between security and safety measures. For example, incident investigations can address both safety and security aspects. 1.3. Resource Optimization: Combining roles may lead to resource optimization by sharing personnel, training, and processes. 2. Challenges: 2.1. Complexity: Managing both AVSEC and Safety requires expertise in two distinct domains. It can be complex due to different regulations, priorities, and stakeholders. 2.2. Conflict of Interest: Balancing security (restrictive measures) with safety (facilitative measures) can create a conflict of interest. For instance, stringent security checks may impact operational efficiency. 2.3. Workload: The workload can be demanding when handling both security and safety functions. 3. Considerations: 3.1. Organization Size: In smaller organizations, combining roles may be practical. Larger organizations may benefit from separate managers. 3.2. Qualifications: The manager must have dual qualifications in both AVSEC and Safety. 3.3. Clear Mandate: Define a clear mandate for the combined role to avoid confusion. 4. In summary, while combining roles can enhance coordination, it’s essential to assess organizational needs, expertise, and potential conflicts.

🚀 Safety Management Systems (SMS): A Vital Pillar in Aviation Safety 🛫 As aviation continues to evolve, Safety Management Systems (SMS) stand at the core of ensuring the industry’s safety and efficiency. In our research, we delve into the key components of SMS—Safety Policy, Safety Assurance (SA), and Safety Risk Management (SRM)—and how they intertwine across Technical, Human, and Organizational dimensions. 🔹 Safety Policy sets the foundation, creating a framework of accountability and a culture of safety within the organization. 🔹 Safety Assurance (SA) ensures that safety processes are functioning as intended through monitoring and performance evaluation. 🔹 Safety Risk Management (SRM) allows us to proactively identify hazards and implement mitigation strategies. The Production (efficient operations) and Protection (safety) process is the delicate balance every aviation organization must achieve. However, different entities such as ICAO, IATA, and IBAC each provide their unique definitions and frameworks for SMS, which can lead to variations in how safety processes are executed and measured globally. 📊 Our research seeks to explore these varied approaches and offer insights into how SMS can be standardized and improved, making aviation safer for all. Let's continue to advance aviation safety by staying committed to excellence in Technical, Human, and Organizational factors. #AviationSafety #SMS #SafetyManagementSystems #AviationResearch #AviationSafetyCulture #RiskManagement #SafetyAssurance
