Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸 Before gathering to enjoy your lakeside BBQs and evening fireworks, it’s worth spending a few minutes remembering and considering the daring boldness with which British colonists risked their lives to become American revolutionaries, and what inspired them to create the world’s longest-lasting constitutional republic, a brilliant form of government conceived by her founders to ensure unalienable rights for her citizens. Since the 1620s, Americans expanded across the continent with a sense of rugged idealism and purpose, ensuring survival from colonial Europe; overcame the ugly sin of slavery by giving 600,000 American souls for freedom; led the modern Age of Enlightenment with a system to encourage risk taking and free enterprise, resulting in the building blocks of our modern society, from the telephone to the airplane; joined with Allied nations to rescue the world from fascism in World War II; and defeated Marxism-Leninism abroad in the 20th century. Now America leads the technological revolution fueling the future of business, travel, communications, healthcare — the full 360 of American life. We have much to be proud of and thankful for as our nation prepares to celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

I’d also like to to thank all of the brave people who gave their lives to obtain and keep our independence for the last 248 years. Original Declaration (link below to read all of it): WHEN in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation. We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness—-That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. He has refused to pass other Laws for the Accommodation of large Districts of People, unless those People would relinquish the Right of Representation in the Legislature, a Right inestimable to them, and formidable to Tyrants only. Today, as many in the U.S. observe the 4th of July, I find myself reflecting on the many dimensions of independence. Whether you're celebrating or, as Gabriela Acosta wisely puts it, hoping for more reasons to celebrate next year, it’s a moment to consider the deeper meanings of freedom. Independence Day traditionally marks autonomy from monarchical rule--which is particularly poignant this year--but deserves to be met with more than unequivocal celebration. Like all things, this deserves some both/and: - BOTH celebration of the freedoms achieved AND a recognition that there's so much farther to go, at home and abroad - BOTH awareness of the freedoms we look to the powers-that-be to guarantee for us AND the freedoms we need win for ourselves by demanding and acting on them - BOTH valuing essential political and social freedoms AND recognizing the personal entanglements and inner attachments continue to inhibit true individual liberation in so many ways This year, may we recognize that there are freedoms that we look to external powers to bestow and guarantee on our behalf, and other freedoms that we can only achieve through personal development and collective action. The word 'Independence', carries a weight heavier than felt, means deeper than heard, and really is the one of the most fundamental, and basic right that governs the behavior of an individual. The exhilarating sense of feeling, when true freedom is achieved, is impeccably liberating and empowering. Maybe it is the first salary, or first profit, buying your own vehicle, moving in to your own house, regardless of what it is, the sense of freedom in itself, releases dopamine. But in order to achieve freedom, virtues such as determination, effort, patience, bravery, and many more factors are needed. Independence, or freedom, isn't something that can be confined to wishing once in a year, it is much bigger than that. Everything and anything that leads to freedom, or help in being independent should be celebrated and cherished by everyone, however small it is. Happy Independence Day to all those 'Dreamers and Doers'.
On this 78th Independence Day, let us take time to remind ourselves, and reflect upon the unwavering and relentless effort, and sacrifices that had to be paid, as the price to break-free from the shackles of oppression.
