The potential demolition of historic buildings, including #10Most #endangered historic site Orange Memorial Hospital, poses significant cultural and economic risks. New development plans reveal demolition of a majority of the complex with no efforts indicated on whether the buildings that date to 1908, could be adaptively reused. #OrangeNJ #EssexCounty #HistoricPreservation #CulturalHeritage #CommunityEngagement #EconomicImpact #Advocacy

Advocacy when it's quiet can be when advocacy is most effective. The Virginia General Assembly is not in session for another 4+ months, but the legislature continues to study and evaluate issues of public policy during the off-season. Next week, a Virginia Housing Commission Work Group will be considering again proponents of House Bill 528 which aimed to restrict an association's authority to regulate the appearance of yards. The Virginia Legislative Action Committee successfully advocated against the bill which was pulled from consideration before a vote could be taken - the potential for the bill to return in a same or similar format may change depending on how this Work Group meeting goes. Please take a few moments to write to your legislators using the link below to OPPOSE House Bill 528 so that community association authorities can be preserved. All of us who live in community associations (myself included) have certain expectations of our neighbors with respect to property maintenance; associations are key to ensuring those expectations are met by everyone. Defeating House Bill 528 is critical to that end. #cai #virginia #conservationlandscaping #advocacy #valac #hoa #condo

Bartholomew Lighting had a great lunch and learn AIA HSW accredited presentation with CBT Architects this past Thursday, on Light Justice in the Public Realm. This hybrid presentation looks at the historical use of lighting in both marginalized and privileged communities, showing the distinction between "just" lighting- which benefits communities- and "unjust" lighting, which is oppressive. This presentation outlines the principles of Light Justice, showing how designers can bring positive solutions for communities in need. Thank you to Robbie Lindstrom from Boston Light Source for helping sponsor the lunch. We hope this conversation inspires more equitable design solutions that address the needs of vulnerable, under-resourced communities. #Light_Justice #SocialEquity #DesignJustice #Advocacy #AIA #LunchandLearn #BlackOwnedBusiness

A great win from the Planning Institute of Australia to address the immediate pressure of the lack of Urban and Regional Planners across Australia. At the same time, PIA is also committed to ensuring vibrant local planning courses (including undergraduate degrees) that will provide a stepping stone for local students wishing to pursue a career in Urban and Regional Planning.
Major advocacy win! 🙌 Following a detailed submission and strong advocacy throughout the year, we are thrilled to see the inclusion of Urban and Regional Planners on the federal government's Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). The CSOL provides access to temporary skilled migration for high demand occupations, and this decision will help address the national shortage of qualified planners in Australia. Could it be? Focus on blight, advocacy from the top, breaking down silos (involvement of over 12 departments), creative marketing and approaches to community engagement, and clear and direct communication. All of these seem to be in play in Cherelle Parker and City of Philadelphia"One Philly, United City Cleaning Initiative". This quote from Carlton Williams, Director of Clean and Green Initiatives demonstrates common sense logic but unfortunately isn't often found or seen in other communities. “History has demonstrated that efforts from a one-time cleaning of the entire city cannot be maintained alone. Preventive measures, enforcement and support from residents and businesses to keep their areas clean is necessary to sustain cleaning efforts”. Congrats and best wishes for continued success!!
