When I read Kim Stanley Robinson's "The Ministry for the Future" a couple years ago, I remember thinking: most of these policy solutions could be applied today - Why don't we? But the answer is, of course, in the story: if you know the book, you know that it was all a bit too little, too late, but still kind of better than nothing. It took so so many catastrophes to get things moving. Entire systems had to collapse before inertia, greed and vested interests were weakened enough for "new" solutions to be applied. Last Thursday, the Idealists Quarterly community gathered to discuss the theme of Alternative Futures. We spoke about how to best organise ourselves to make a better future a reality. As one of our speakers said: We don't need more ideas. We need to be allowed to implement the good solutions we already have. We need to empower those who have the public interest at heart, and kick out of power those who don't.
