Timber sash windows originated in the late 17th century in England, with their popularity peaking during the Georgian and Victorian eras. The design, which features one or more movable panels or “sashes” that form a frame to hold panes of glass, was revolutionary at the time. This design allowed for better ventilation and natural light in homes, which were particularly valued in an era before electric lighting and modern heating. The craftsmanship in their construction also made them a status symbol for the affluent, reflecting a homeowner’s wealth and taste. Over time, the sash window evolved to suit various architectural styles and technological advancements. However, the fundamental design principles have remained unchanged, a testament to their enduring functionality and aesthetic appeal. DESIGN THREAD # 8 BIOPHILIA Biophilia, biomimicry, and bio-design drive innovations across sectors, including design and architecture. Biophilia starts with the use of patterns, colors, and shapes that echo nature on accessories, furniture, coverings, and finishes. While we derive some benefits from being exposed to representations of nature, we need biophilic design to go deeper. Green walls, green roofs, and green infrastructure are all steps in that direction, and so is the use of natural construction materials. We are a part of nature and cannot survive without it. Our built environment needs to embrace that. Does this design thread resonate with you? * We’ve curated 23 architecture & interior design threads woven throughout the built environment. The architectural design is unique for its fluidity and seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. The circular levels are enfolded by a ribbon-like structure that creates a dynamic, spiraling effect, evoking the image of a ribbon gently wrapped around the building. This spiral motif is mirrored by the staircase, enhancing the sense of flow within the space. The incorporation of transparent materials blurs the line between the building's interior and the natural surroundings, while the horizontal slats provide shade and an aesthetic rhythm to the facade. The structure's form is organic and evocative, resembling natural shapes like seashells or whirlpools, which makes the building appear as a natural extension of the environment rather than an imposition upon it. This design is an embodiment of elegance and innovation in modern architecture.

Translucent buildings have a unique aesthetic and functional appeal – the use of polycarbonate cladding allows natural light in. The light that filters through these translucent materials tends to be diffused, creating a soft and even glow. These designs strike a balance between openness and seclusion. Used as facades and roofs to partitions and decorative elements, these panels allow for creative and versatile designs combined with energy efficiency. The pool enclosure at Midstream by ARC Architects is one of our examples where translucent panels were used alongside glass to change a once outdoor pool into an indoor pool without shutting out the outdoor light. Here functionality rather than aesthetics was at the core but still giving us a modern design. Watch this space for more of these sleek, modern and minimalist contemporary architectural designs from us. #translucentbuildings

This rendering shows the facade design of The Onyx a new residential development in Lynnwood Glen. We've approached the facade design with a philosophy that merges the poetic with the pragmatic, much like composing a piece of music where every note plays its part. Our balconies are not just appendages; they're extensions of the living space, reaching out to embrace the vistas of Lynnwood Glen. The timber louvers we've introduced add a layer of tactility and warmth, transforming these outdoor areas into intimate sanctuaries that still breathe and pulse with the rhythm of natural light. And then, there's the play of the vertical fins. It's a dance of shadows and light, designed to shield our interiors from the late afternoon sun's direct assault. This isn't just about aesthetics; it's a deliberate, functional response to our environment, an act of solar control that speaks to a deeper understanding of place and context. In essence, what we've created with The Onyx is a facade that's alive. It's responsive, not just to the needs of those who live within but to the environment that surrounds it. It's a testament to the idea that design can be both beautiful and intelligent, capable of enhancing the human experience while respecting the natural world. #TheOnyx #FacadeDesign #Architecture #SustainableDesign #UrbanLiving #residentialdevelopment #ModernLiving #facade #timberscreen #DesignPhilosophy #urbanliving #kunzraubenheimerarchitects
