We extend our deepest gratitude to all the donors and their families who made this life-changing gift possible. Today marks EIGHT years since I donated bone marrow. In honor of this anniversary, here are 8 things I want you to know about donating bone marrow: 1️⃣ I was never in any pain. 2️⃣ Bone marrow and the red blood cells associated grow back in two weeks. I ran a marathon 23 days after my surgery, and completed an Ironman later that year. 3️⃣ Anyone ages 18-40 can donate, and there's an acute need for donations from people of color. 4️⃣ Not all bone marrow donation requires surgery, and for those that do, you can choose general or local anesthesia. 5️⃣ Bone marrow donation does not cost the donor anything, nor does the donor earn anything. 6️⃣ The recipient of my procedure is a family member who is fully recovered now, but about 70 percent of procedures are with unrelated patients. 7️⃣ The most shocking thing I did not know before the procedure is, if successful, it literally cures the cancer of the recipient as the donor bone marrow replaces the recipient's immune system. 8️⃣ I would do it again. There are very few occasions in life where regular humans can save another life. I highly recommend everyone learn more and consider joining the registry at Be The Match.
