Pediatric concussions are a common and critical health issue, but not all children have equal access to the appropriate care. This recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association sheds light on how sociodemographic and community factors shape where children with concussions receive their initial care. The study, which analyzed data from pediatric concussion cases, uncovered notable disparities in healthcare access that raise important questions about equity in healthcare. Some suggested actions include: - Expanding access to primary care and urgent care in underserved areas. - Improving education for families about concussion management options. - Implementing community-based programs to mitigate structural barriers. By understanding these disparities, healthcare providers, policymakers, and communities can work together to create solutions that ensure every child receives timely, high-quality concussion care. Navigating the challenges of ageism in healthcare is critical for ensuring that older adults receive respectful and individualized care. Stereotypes and discrimination can lead to both overtreatment and undertreatment, underscoring the need for medical education that focuses on the unique needs of aging populations. A significant issue is the lack of geriatric education in medical training. Initiatives like Age-Friendly Health Systems show promise in countering ageism by centering care around the desires and needs of older adults. Our network is trained to recognize older individuals' value and diversity and meet those needs directly, without falling prey to the issues this article discusses.
