CONFLATING STRUCTURAL SAFETY WITH LIFE SAFETY If you are confused by the title of this post, I encourage you to read Commentary L, part of the Structural Commentaries of the National Building Code of Canada. Commentary L provides a rational methodology for the evaluation of existing buildings and differentiates between life safety and structural safety.

In our recent open-access paper in Engineering Structures we have investigated the crack behaviour of dapped-end beams, proposing strut-and-tie models to estimate the crack width at the re-entrant corner. Experimental and analytical investigation of the crack behaviour of dapped-end beams: https://lnkd.in/dNzdf3c2 Thanks a lot for the great work of my co-authors Karin Yu from kfmResearch – Chair of Structural Engineering – Concrete Structures and Bridge Design, ETH Zurich, as well as Luis Pallarés Rubio and Pedro Miguel Sosa from Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV).

So many great takeaways from today's ideas forum! Thanks to Juliano Denicol for facilitating and to all the panelists for sparking a much-needed conversation in our infrastructure industry. The main takeaways that stood out for me were: 👉 Keep people and the ultimate customer at the heart of everything the Program enterprise does, using data and digital as enablers. Recognize that digitization is a journey. 👉 Focus on outcomes to enable people and nature to flourish together. 👉 Align risk with the capability to ensure sustainable returns. 👉 Have clear incentives to encourage integration. 👉 Address human and interface complexity with intergovernmental bodies. We are seeing more examples of these, particularly the New York City Owners Roundtable and astronomy projects offer great learnings on managing external dependencies, particularly in multi-country supply chains. Looking forward to implementing these insights and continuing the discussion! 🚀 #InfrastructureInnovation #IdeasForum #Collaboration

We can only prepare our engineers equipped with skills to navigate the rapidly changing world if we are clear about what future looks like ahead of them. Klaassen et al. (2019) describe the eight fundamental engineering roles in the Dutch society of 2035. You may read more about their report through this link: https://lnkd.in/gGFr-_Eq

In the MOHOHO project, an interdisciplinary team from the Institute of Architectural Technology and the Institute of Timber Engineering and Wood Technology at Graz University of Technology, together with corporate partners Kaufmann Bausysteme and KS Ingenieure ZT GmbH, have developed a system for a modular wooden high-rise building, which is designed with the purpose of extending its operating life and life span thanks to its flexible adaptability. Modules can be installed on top of or next to each other, can be changed individually and offer a flexible floor plan. A patent application has been applied for this system. The Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft mbH) has funded the project. - https://lnkd.in/drFxxUMb Image source: IAT - TU Graz
