How can we stop children's mental health declining further? Can social prescribing be the solution? In this article we review the current mental health services and support that is available for children and young people, and how the demand for support is on the rise. Furthermore, experts have explained we are in crisis due to lack of resources, support workers, and time. We review which services are currently working and which are not. As well as how social prescribing (as used in higher education) can be used to improve the mental health of children and young people by addressing non-clinical needs and reducing demands on mental health teams and GPs #socialprescribing #accesselemental #mentalhealth #support #children #youngpeople

It's important to acknowledge that there are no quick fixes for mental health challenges, but investing in mental health is an investment in everyone's future. Progressive change begins now, and although European child and family policies are well-resourced, more can be done to address the mental health needs of children and youth. Let's commit to enhancing our policies and resources to better support the mental well-being of our younger generations. Together, we can make a meaningful difference. Shocking statistics reveal over a quarter of a million children await mental health support in England, with nearly one million referred to services in 2022-23. Only 32% received support, while 39% had referrals closed. Waiting times vary drastically, with some waiting over two years. Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza emphasizes the urgency for timely support, attributing issues to neglect of mental health priorities. Despite increased funding, demand surpasses availability. She calls for a 10-year plan, reduced waiting times, and reforms to provide comprehensive mental health care. Today marks the last day of Suicide Prevention Month 2024. For too long the conversation around mental health and suicide has been stigmatized. We can combat this stigma by sharing resources and support. Just this month, Governor Hochul signed into law the Student Lifeline Act which requires New York State’s 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline to be printed on college student ID cards. This initiative is another recent measure being used to promote mental health. #988 #mentalhealthisphysicalhealth #mindhealth If you think someone might be considering suicide, be the one to help them by taking these 5 steps: Ask. Be There. Help Keep Them Safe. Help Them Connect. Follow Up. Learn more from the @National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH): https://go.nih.gov/Rz87sZ0 . #SPM24 #suicidepreventionmonth #BeThe1To.
