Our ‘Emergency First Aid At Work Level 3 (Including Certification)’ online course is taking place on the 12th of November 2024. Book now to avoid disappointment !! ITC Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work Employers have to risk assess their workplace first aid requirements and the 1-day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification is one of the statutory qualifications for this purpose. If the risk assessment indicates that employees may be faced with life-threatening incidents where they have to manage the casualty for up to 10 minutes, or deal with very minor incidents that will not require medical assistance, then the EFAW is the course that meets this need. Delivery - Topics include: Roles & responsibilities Assessing incidents Dealing with collapse (with and without breathing) Choking Bleeding Shock Seizures Minor workplace incidents Using first aid kit This qualification is designed to provide essential life saving skills. Typical delivery methods are predominantly practical and the course is assessed by continual observation of candidate performance. Features Qualification training requires: Minimum tutor contact time of 6 hours (excluding breaks). 1:12 tutor to candidate ratio. Course must be completed within 3 weeks of starting. Each delivery session must be a minimum of 2 hours. Successful completion will result in candidate gaining ITC Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work with a valid (licence to practice) lifetime of 3 years from date of completion. The HSE strongly recommend candidates take an annual 3 hour refresher during the lifetime of the qualification. The qualification is revalidated by attending another EFAW course after 3 years. So, you have a valid ENG1, but are you really ‘fit’ to work on a #superyacht? To work on a yacht you will first need to complete a medical examination called an ENG1.. Upon the successfully completion of such an examination you will be given a “Category 1 - Fit for service, with no restrictions”.. (…effectively a green light to work on a superyacht from a medical perspective…) But…what does an ENG1 test for, exactly? Generally, an accredited doctor will measure your height, weight, and blood pressure and ask for a urine sample, to check for diabetes etc. He or she will then listen to your lungs, look in your ears and check your vision by asking you to read a short passage from a book. You will be asked a few short questions about your medical history.. This is all great from a physical health stand point however, does it appropriately consider and address the biggest and most detrimental health issue currently effecting crew… …their mental health? Is it time that Maritime and Coastguard Agency looked into implementing a more robust and comprehensive ENG1 framework that includes more mental health screening in the first instance and implementing processes designed to track and monitor the mental health of #yachtcrew when they renew every two years? Should accredited practitioners issuing these medial certificates bear more of a responsibility when issuing a “fit for service” accreditation and seek to ensure that such accreditations extend beyond just ‘physical fitness’ and better consider and track the ‘mental fitness’ of an individual? The #yachting industry is well known for its harsh working/living conditions which have varied and often enduring mental effects on its workforce. And as a direct result we are seeing increased signs of crew mental fatigue and illness across the industry as a whole Do you think that enough is being done to appropriately address the increase in mental illness and distress amongst our crew? Should the ENG1 framework better address the mental side of health and seek to track individuals progress? Are doctors issuing the ENG1 even trained appropriately to test mental health markers? Please jump in with your views - interested to hear your perspective on this. Image credit: Cool Workwear #maritime #recruitment #yachting
