My daughter’s school Speech Day marks The End of another school year. Ok so it is admittedly something of a personal endurance test of one’s fortitude and grace to sit through 3 hours of name checks and musical performances but I wouldn’t miss it for the world…my daughter’s school instils recognition of effort and attitude as much as outcome and rewards accordingly. Only the stoniest heart could not be moved by the passion and loyalty to this school demonstrated by every single person in the room; student, parent/guardian, educator, support person. Kids who can’t run as fast as someone else but turn up to practice every week get recognised, kids who aren’t as proficient at reading as others but read more books than most get recognised and kids with a range of skills outside the regular 3Rs get recognised. And yes, kids who are exemplary scholars get recognised…to equal value as those who demonstrate the other school values of fellowship and resilience. For me this is the best kind of education - there is little value in being the smartest person in the room if you can not help the least smartest person in the room recognise and contribute their own unique value to overall success. #teamwork #teamspirit

In today’s world, our relationships with the "Other"—whether in the context of elections, migration, or social issues—are more important than ever. As it turns out: that the "Other" is not so different from ourselves; we all, in various contexts are "Others". So, how can we relate to each other constructively as "Others"? Join me and fellow scholars from around the globe over the next five weeks as we delve into this essential theme through the lens of "Hospitality to Strangers." Together, we’ll explore effective ways to engage with these issues, grounded in biblical principles and patterns.
Last chance to register! Join a cohort of scholars from around the globe starting on November 4 to explore a central theme in the Bible - hospitality to strangers. Through this course, you'll explore how hospitality can serve as a vehicle for connecting faith and learning in higher education. Registration costs $100, though aid is available for those who need it (we offer a 50% or 90% discount). Contact Laurie Lemmen with registration questions, laurie@calvin.edu.
