"Seaweed is not a fish!"—one of my key messages at the Arctic Algae Conference in #Reykjavik, #Iceland, on September 5th, 2024. When you have a metric ton of fish on your deck, the potential revenue is clear: it’s just a matter of time to market and price, with steady demand always present. But when you harvest a metric ton of seaweed, the challenge begins. Seaweed must be made storage-stable within 24 hours, or it risks spoilage. Market demand varies significantly depending on the species, processing methods, price, and bioactive compounds. Unlike fish, the #seaweed business is more about blue #biotech than just #biomass. Understanding the market and applying the right technology is crucial to converting raw seaweed into valuable products. In the Western world, we need to lower the costs of cultivated seaweed and scale up production to make seaweed a #sustainable and reliable resource that can replace existing sources, enhance food and feed health, and reduce carbon footprints across supply chains. This requires active participation from established food, feed, and commodity producers through long-term off-take agreements, committing to price points and product supplies. The conference featured many exciting presentations, including insights from Dorit Avni, the coordinator of the #Horizon2020 Project Algae4IBD, on the impact of macro- and microalgae species on the microbiome, and Jorunn Skjermo (SINTEF Ocean), who shared results from some of the world’s most exposed seaweed cultivation unit and the related modeling work. It was also a pleasure to see the first results from Ocean Rainforest's joint venture, Lava Seaweed, in Iceland and the #CircleFeed project funded by Nordic Innovation. A big thank you to #Rækt with Ingibjörg VALGEIRSDOTTIR, and Sigurdur Petursson for organizing the event at the wonderful Arion banki venue.

Mycorrhiza manipulation: nature vs nurture by David Cutress "Mycorrhiza and specifically ‘arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi’ (AMF) and Ectomycorrhiza (EcM) are important symbiotic fungi involved in the successful growth of the vast majority of plant species across the world." "We have previously discussed their roles and strategies impacting their activities in an introductory article. The following article aims to expand on this by discussing the different strategies surrounding manipulating these species and the impacts of this on ecosystems, as mycorrhiza are well cited for their strong potential within sustainable food production." 👀 A high percentage of the food consumed by humanity depends on soil, which can be in two ways, either directly or indirectly, through the consumption of crops or the feeding of animals with crops, making soil one of the most important resources in the world. 🌍 At Tribiome, we have sampled and characterised soils in three different countries: Spain, Italy and South Africa in order to compare the different climates, soil types and agricultural management, with the aim of finding a common agricultural pattern to improve the resistance of wheat to different alterations caused by climate change. 🌡 ↪ Discover this article "Understanding soil: its importance and impact on agriculture": https://lnkd.in/e7Ga8FiP #Tribiome #Agrifood #Microbiome #SoilHealth #EuropeanProject Wagralim | ITENE | Universidad de Burgos | ASAJA (Asociación Agraria-Jóvenes Agricultores) | ValGenetics | SIMAVI Software Imagination & Vision | Rete Semi Rurali ETS | Natural Resources Institute Finland / Luonnonvarakeskus | Particula Group | Grupo Fertiberia @Agence exécutive européenne pour la recherche (REA) | @L’UE_ENV | @EUAgri | @HorizonEU Celine DONDEYNAZ | Magdalena Gajdzińska

Today, we celebrate #WorldEnvironmentDay! Every year, a theme is designated for this global day to encourage communities and individuals to take targeted actions. This year, the chosen theme is "Restore Our Earth." Each of us can make a difference in our own way! All partners of Farmyng are actively involved in addressing the major challenges of our time. More than just a commitment, impact is truly at the core of the project’s DNA. By producing ingredients derived from insect waste at the vertical farm in Amiens, we provide a concrete, natural, and sustainable solution for preserving soil and its ecosystems. · It enriches the soil without harming local fauna and flora; · It improves soil health and thus helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions; · It reactivates the microbial life in the soil and has even shown synergistic effects with earthworms. Every day, Farmÿng is committed to World Environment Day. #SustainableAgriculture #Farmÿng #Agriculture #plant #Partner #soils #ecosystem Bioeconomy For Change / Ÿnsect / ADM / Starfood Holland / CRA-W Centre wallon de Recherches agronomiques / Eurofins / Quantis / PNO Consultants France / Skretting / Virbac / CLIB - Cluster Industrielle Biotechnologie / Stowarzyszenie Zachodniopomorski Klaster Chemiczny "Zielona Chemia" / METEX NØØVISTAGO / MG2MIX / Familia Torres / CEA / ULMA Handling Systems / Clextral / COMPO France

💻 #Free online event! The EJP SOIL project AGROECOSeqC will host an online scientific forum! Agroecological intensification and functional biodiversity March 4th, 2024, 9:00-11:00 CEST LINK TO REGISTER: https://t.ly/BgNKi Soil fauna and microbial communities drive key ecosystem functions such as nutrient supply to primary production and SOC accumulation. However, plant diversity shapes the composition and activity of soil biota through rhizodeposition and N-P uptake, microbial symbioses and trophic cascades. In a wide network of EU experimental sites, the EJPSOIL project AGROECOseqC investigates how agro-ecological intensification of cropping systems (e.g. introduction of plant services) can allow better regulation of soil organic matter (SOM) degradation/resynthesis and nutrient cycling by the plant-soil system. This scientific forum will provide an opportunity to discuss methodologies and first results on plant-soil fauna-microbial functional diversity, biomass production, N leaching, C sequestration and much more. #biodiversity #agriculture #intensification #nutrients #onlinewebinar #freewebinar #soilscience #soils #soilhealth

A compelling profile of our portfolio company, Groundwork BioAg, from Haaretz. Entitled, "The Israeli Company That Uses Fungus to Tackle the #Climate and #Soil Crises," this piece walks through how Groundwork discovered a way to increase #agricultural #crop #yields by means of #mycorrhizal #fungus. And as an amazing, bonus, the #soil to which the fungus is added #sequesters more #greenhousegases than the most advanced #carbon-trapping systems on the planet. When looking at #CDR projects remember that there are only three things that matter: 1) #Scalability - how quickly and #economically can the CDR platform be deployed? 2) #Measurability - can the #sequestration be confirmed? 3) #Quality - is the removal #permanent? Did you know soil is the most diverse ecosystem on Earth? 🌍 Soil isn't just dirt; it's a complex and vibrant ecosystem teeming with life. In just one gram of fertile soil, billions of bacteria and hundreds of thousands of fungi collaborate in a delicate balance, playing crucial roles in nutrient cycling and plant health. 🦠 The microbes help plants access nutrients in the soil. For instance, legume plants form symbiotic relationships with soil bacteria known as Rhizobia, which aid in nitrogen fixation. This process transforms atmospheric nitrogen into a form plants can use, supporting their growth and enhancing soil fertility. 🌾🫘 In the LEGUMINOSE project, we are exploring the microbial communities within legume-cereal intercropping systems across Europe. Our Italian partners at Università degli Studi di Firenze, spearheaded by our project coordinator Shamina Imran Pathan, are experts in these microbial analyses. They have prepared and are currently analysing 700 samples from our research fields in Italy, Denmark, Germany, and Spain. Using next-generation sequencing, we aim to reveal how soil microbes interact in the diverse intercropping system and how that contributes to sustainable agriculture and climate resilience. 🔍 Interested in learning more about soil microbes? Dive deeper into this fascinating topic by reading the full blog post on our website. And stay stuned for updates on the results of our microbial analyses. https://lnkd.in/easDr7zB #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateResilience #SoilHealth #AgricultureInnovation
