How do we as trainers and trainees develop a clear understanding of skill acquisition and development? Using the example of teaching a child to ride a bike, there are three methods you can choose from: 1. Classroom Lecture 2. Stationary Exercise Bike 3. Balance Bike Which would you choose? Which is more effective in teaching the one concept that does not change in riding a bike: Balance? If you guessed balance bike, you are on the right path. The balance bike affords practicing balancing in a representative way—meaning it's akin to the actual skill of riding a bike. These same concepts and principles can be applied to first responder training to improve learning in limited timeframes.
