For too long, Latinas have been systematically overlooked in academia and policy discussions. Despite their significant contributions to diverse communities’ labor force and well-being, Latinas remain significantly underrepresented in influential sectors, including law, media, business, and STEM. Taking an intersectional approach, Latina Futures 2050 Lab responds to persistent inequalities experienced by Latinas and similarly situated populations. Our strategic plan serves as a roadmap for this groundbreaking five-year project. The Plan addresses the multifaceted Latina experience in the U.S. by contextualizing key facts about Latinas and shares the origins of LFL and LFL’s vision, mission, and focus areas. What a joy to connect with Beverley Samways over our shared beliefs and pursuits! It's affirming to find someone thinking about self-injury, families, and disability in a similar way from a different corner of the world. Beverley is founder of Unique Connections (uniqueconnections.org.uk), a nonprofit specializing in supporting individuals with self-injury and disability from a trauma-informed perspective. As you'll see in our full conversation on the Unique Connections Youtube page, this is an unusual and much-needed approach. We discuss my recent publication, "Self-injurious behavior in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: An interdisciplinary family systems review," which is available open access in the Journal of Family Theory and Review.
Self-injury specialist; founder of Unique Connections; researcher with UoB and Churchill Fellow 2023/4
Earlier this month I got to spend some time with Dr Caroline Roberts from Minnesota University. She is a self-injury researcher, with a focus on family systems. We got talking about relationships, systems, attachment, and, most joyous of all, shared humanity. You can check out the conversation here: https://lnkd.in/eNz54PKR

“Reality should not be this universal standard of limiting norms. Even if binary order, coding, or digital twins, create a more efficient world, we need to make sure the systems we live in are philosophically and existentially healthy and rich. It is about expanding the domains of possibility for all forms of life, in a way that respects the balance of the whole Gaia living system and beyond.” Luis de Miranda That’s why I have recently joined Enriched Realities Assembly as a founding member. For me, the Enriched Realities Assembly is a place to cooperate and co-create with others to integrate our entangled selves in a world that is suffused with otherness – whether digital, natural, cultural, or artificial and to practice and explore philosophically healthy enriched realities for both humans and non-humans.

My currernt state of thinking: Every current technology has its trajectory: How and why it evolved as it is and how it will evolve depending on future technical improvements and - very significantly - future needs/demands. So, rather than just take the present states (of technology and needs) for granted and extrapolate from there, let us step back and let us fantasize about the future needs and technological possibilities - including an enormous potential of creativity and human adaptability (not immediate but long term!!!). E.g what kinds of mobility do we really, really wish, what comfort do we really, really wish/need, when there are much less constraints from present technologies? A plethora of scenarios opens up, both good and bad. Wise incentives for creativity can steer us towards the good ones. Maybe we engineers should teach politics some proven methods of opening the mind and then finding optimal solutions, including risk management and getting wiser stepwise?
