This Remembrance Sunday, We Honour and Remember 🌹 Today, we pause to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of those who served in the Armed Forces, defending the freedoms we hold dear. This is a moment to show deep gratitude for the brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice and to acknowledge the veterans among us who have selflessly served. Across the UK, many households include a veteran, highlighting the breadth of service and dedication within our communities. Active duty's mental, emotional, and physical world is very different from normal civilian life. How could we expect people to have a flawless transition when the two worlds don't even compare on many levels? We will encounter setbacks, roadblocks, hindrances, differences, and struggles when we reenter civilian life. An oldie but a goodie, and well worth revisiting. This man, Shlomo Rechnitz, sees 400 US troops in an airport, eating paper-bag meals. He intervenes and pays for each squaddie to have a meal of their choice from an airport resto, $50.00 a head. Then he stands in front of them and thanks them for protecting him and his family from evil. I have first hand experience of Jewish community generosity and kindness, often in the form of an onslaught of potato latkes, matzah ball soup, rugelach, and brisket. Don't bother trying to politely refuse; resistance is futile. While standing six to protect these people as they worship, work, play, and celebrate, I have also borne the brunt of an onslaught of genuine gratitude for the presence of me, my team, and other stakeholders in the protective operation; "Thank you for being here for us". "Thank you for protecting us." "We couldn't assemble in peace if you guys weren't here." "We are only safe because of you guys" Etc, etc, etc. It's a far cry from being spat on, shot at, and insulted by certain other segments of the population. All this to say, in a roundabout way- the next time you see a soldier, veteran, cop, firefighter, paramedic ordering a drink and a bite at a coffeehouse or diner- think hard about digging deep into your pocket and paying for that order. Today, we #honor the #workingdogs, both past and present, that have served alongside their two-legged teammates on the #battlefield. March 13, 1942, the US Army began training for the new War Dog Program. This was the beginning of the dogs official military service, but dogs have served alongside their humans for centuries. Dogs continue to serve in #combat zones, execute rescue operations, identify hazardous materials and illegal substances, and conduct numerous other tasks to support #veterans, wounded #warriors, and the #disabled. Once retired from military service, some dogs are #not able to be adopted by their handlers. Many are too aggressive or suffer invisible wounds, just like their human counterparts, that make them unfit for #adoption. As we mourn the loss of this remarkable veteran, let us remember his bravery during World War II and the Korean War, his role as a USS ARIZONA survivor, and his dedication as a VP-11 Black Cat Pilot. His contributions to our nation, including founding the SERE Program, have left an unforgettable mark on our history. We pray for eternal peace for Lou.
