In structure, there are four major elements viz., Beam, column, slab and footing In that column is a vertical member which withstand axial loading. Types of column 🟢Based on loading 🟢Based on height 🟢Based on reinforcement 🟢Based on shape Based on height , There are two variants, 🔹️short column 🔹️long column According to IS456 If Ratio of effective length to depth should be less than 12,It is a short column. Short column fails at crushing as shown in figure If ratio is greater than 12, it is long column Long column fails at buckling as shown in figure #structural #civil #engineering #Indian_standard

🏗️ This article presents the design of cellular raft foundations, a spread foundation system with interlocking ground beams and both ground-bearing and suspended slabs. Cellular rafts provide added strength for heavy loads on weak soils and create spaces for utilities or storage. The system involves a suspended slab at the top and a bearing slab in contact with the ground, with deep concrete beams connecting them. This design article covers preliminary sizing, flexible vs. rigid methods, and structural analysis of slab and beam components. 👉 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dEzrA-qE #FoundationDesign #CellularRaft #CivilEngineering 🌍 #StructuralAnalysis #GeotechnicalEngineering

A good experiment of progressive collapse study along with showing effect of connection details as partially pinned vs fixed connections.

#Steel_connections Beam-to-column. Part 2. Experimental test program is focused on progressive collapse and utilizing the alternative path method. The objective is to selectively remove key load-bearing components (column) and reanalyze the remaining structure's capability to redistribute the loads to prevent progressive collapese. The main emphasis is on the development of catenary action within beams, which would enable the transfer of loads to other columns. Specimens 1 (Web cleat -presented in first part) and 4 (Fin plate- second part) could only resist very limited vertical loads due to their inferior moment resistances, but in the presence of adequate horizontal restraint, a great increase in load-carrying capacity was obtained through mobilising catenary action. #civil #civilengineering #civilengineer #architektur #arhitecture #arhitektura #arquitetura

🦺 Combined pile caps are used to transfer loads from multiple columns to piles when individual pile caps would overlap, or site constraints apply. These caps ensure even load distribution by maintaining a symmetrical layout, preventing bending from eccentricity. The attached article covers key steps: pile sizing, cap proportions, structural analysis, and reinforcement details. 👉 Read the full article here: [https://lnkd.in/drSFUwY3] #PileCapDesign #StructuralEngineering 🏗️ #FoundationDesign #CivilEngineering #GeotechnicalEngineering 🌍 #Construction

Are you familiar with shear-flexural failure in Concrete Beams? In one interview, It was asked to explain this phenomenon and how it can be avoided. Shear-flexural failure occurs when a concentrated load is combined with distributed load over a simply supported beam. The combined effect of shear/bending causes an increase in midspan deflection and positive moment until it exceeds flexural capacity, resulting in a shear-bending beam failure. To avoid this, it's important to ensure enough shear reinforcement with minimal spacing is provided on and around the vertical shear concentrated load. Shear drops can also be a solution if accepted architecturally. Stay informed on industry insights and best practices to ensure successful project outcomes. #engineering #construction #concretebeams #shearflexuralfailure

CAN YOU PROVIDE THE SOIL MODULUS OF SUBGRADE REACTION BECAUSE WE NEED IT FOR.... Great post here by Hamzah M. B. Al-Hashemi and a webinar worth watching. The number of times I have heard this and made exactly the same argument is...well...a lot. The modulus of subgrade reaction is not a soil parameter. It requires knowledge of the foundation size, foundation stiffness, soil stiffness and foundation load/stress distribution. An iterative process between geotechnical and structural engineers is often used to revise k values until structural and geotechnical models provide similar deflection responses. Please contact your preferred geotechnical engineer the next time you feel the need to ask, "what is the soil modulus of subgrade reaction" to make sure you get an adequate response. #soilstructureinteraction #geotechnical #geology

🔍 Subgrade Reaction (Ks) = 120 or 60 * Bearing Capacity?! 🤔 As a #structural or #geotechnical engineer, have you encountered this famous equation? Then don't make this mistake: 👉 Did you know there are usually 3 methods to estimate Ks? Check out the video below for a quick rundown & comparison 🎥 But here's the kicker: relying on Ks = 120 or 60 * Bearing Capacity in kN/m3 (or for #piles: Capacity / 10mm) in foundation #design can be a costly mistake! 🚫 Curious why? 🔗 Refer to my 1-hour recorded #webinar that was held with PLAXIS Geotechnical Analysis for the full story: https://lnkd.in/dufTE2Nm 🛠️ Steel #reinforcement quantity and distribution in your foundation hinge on Ks. Misusing this equation can lead to under-design or over-design, risking safety and economy. Let's uncover the nuances and debunk the myths 🌟 Ks is not a #soil parameter and in some cases is not valid to be used as a concept. Hamzah M. B.
