🔒 What do you do for international privacy day? International Privacy Day is observed annually on January 28 and originates from the Council of Europe’s Data Protection Day, first observed in 2007. The date marks the anniversary of the signing of Convention 108 on January 28, 1981. Convention 108, formally known as the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, is the first legally binding international treaty to address privacy and data protection. Its goal was to ensure the protection of individuals’ personal data while facilitating the free flow of information across borders. The day aims to raise awareness among individuals, businesses, and governments about privacy rights, the importance of protecting personal data, and the responsibilities tied to data processing in the digital era. It has since been adopted globally as Data Privacy Day, especially in regions like the United States and Canada. 💬 Discover our interview with Luca Bolognini, President of the Italian Institute for Privacy and Data Valorisation (IIP) and co-chair of the Privacy Symposium 💬 The Italian Parliament has just voted and approved an important amendment to Section 110 of the Italian Privacy Code, which is relevant for studies in the healthcare and biomedical sectors. During Privacy Symposium 2023, Mr Bolognini chaired a roundtable roundtable discussion that deliberated the need for the amendment. Following the conference, the amendment was concretely drafted, presented, and finally approved by the Italian Parliament. Mr Bolognini shares: “We had the opportunity, during the Privacy Symposium, to meet and discuss these roundtable issues, collecting proposals from stakeholders, authorities, researchers, and institutions involved in the research field.
