In this third week of the EU and Global Cybersecurity Fundamentals course at the European Centre on Privacy and Cybersecurity (ECPC), I will be giving one of my favourite lectures - “A Cybersecurity Reading of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (General Data Protection Regulation - GDPR)”. At this point in the program, our students have an understanding of EU data protection legal instruments (including the GDPR). Today, as the title suggests, we will explore and discuss the GDPR from a cybersecurity angle, isolating relevant provisions and highlighting the connection between cybersecurity and data protection both in technical and legal terms. Moreover, we will discuss concepts such as Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability (i.e., the CIA triad) and their meanings in both the privacy and cybersecurity domains. Moreover, the impact of data security on data transfers will be discussed. Finally, possible sanctions, liabilities, and responsibilities due to a lack of cybersecurity measures resulting in violations of the GDPR will be addressed.
