Advancing Privacy in the Analysis of Government Data: Switzerland's Differential Privacy Approach The Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) (Bundesamt für Statistik BFS) has made significant progress in implementing differential privacy in its organisation, addressing a key challenge in government data: balancing data utility with privacy protection. Differential privacy represents a new approach to handling sensitive government data. The mathematical framework adds controlled noise to to data products before they are disseminated in order to reduce as far as possible the identification and extraction of personal information while preserving analytical value. As Switzerland's central data hub, the FSO manages data access requests from researchers and government agencies. Their implementation of differential privacy through its Data Science Competence Center demonstrates how agencies can meet strict privacy requirements while enabling data-driven insights. The FSO's new open-source platform, Lomas, implements these differential privacy principles. It enables authorized users to analyze sensitive datasets without direct access, with privacy-protected results. The platform is currently in its proof-of-concept phase.
