It’s time for celebrations as NMTI Fernandez marks FIVE years of transforming maternal care in India. Since its inception on 6 November 2019, it has trained 481 midwives who are helping mothers experience positive and joyous birthing across public and private facilities. Here’s a snapshot of NMTI Fernandez’ impact since 2020 🤰🏻 1,44,384 antenatal mothers assessed by midwives 💕 25,761 mothers were birthed as per their choice 👶🏻 23,146 newborns were assessed out of which 18% were resuscitated 🪡 C-sections rate declines from 60.2% to 57 % PH facilities with midwives 📈 Uptick in normal births from 39.8% to 43% in PH facilities with midwives #MaternalCare #MidwivesOfIndia #CelebratingMidwives #PositiveBirth #NMTIFernandez #MaternalHealth #ChildbirthEducation #SupportMidwives #HealthcareTransformation #MidwiferyTraining #FernandezHospital

Happy international MIDWIFE day what would the world be without midwives? I think a very lonely dark place. Midwives all over the world help and support women during the time from fertility pregnancy birth, and the time after midwives play a very important role in all societies. Even if we celebrate, however, midwives and endangered species despite the fact that they save help save women’s and babies lives. After being a professional midwife already for 41 years I still want to celebrate, but I also want to point into different directions. First of all, there’s many many countries where we still have to implement mid free schools to help Women enroll areas to give birth safely. And secondly, in other parts of the world midwives face a lot of problems . Poor payments , rising liability insurance . Let’s celebrate midwives and help with them and for them bring more balance in to the world . Every birth counts . #Midwives #InternationalMidwivesDay #Birth

That day we all woke up in disbelief and dread in 2016, I had a monthly meeting already scheduled with #midwives around the country. Normally we would check in about clinical issues and quality improvement initiatives, but that day we held space together to process and grieve and sort through the implications for our patients, our own families, our communities, and our profession. Since that time, I have prioritized getting together with midwives when big changes are stirring. Midwives know how to dig down deep and do hard work. We watch the women and people we care for do it all day every day. And as midwives in whatever part of the system we are operating in, *we* are working hard, uphill, fighting for our patients and communities in a system that would prefer to keep the 5-alarm fire that is the status quo rather than let women and their chosen care providers have any real power. Tomorrow morning in the wee hours while they are still counting up ballots I'll be up to catch my pre-dawn flight to the American Association of Birth Centers, Inc. #BirthInstitute to gather again in uncertain times with the best company I could possibly imagine - #midwives and other #CommunityBirth workers. This time I hope we get to do the other thing midwives really know how to do - tap into joyful collaboration to bring forth a new future that is healthy and bright! 🎉 But either way, I'm just so grateful I'll be holding and being held by midwives. At the conference, I'll be talking about integrating community care and hospital care so that pregnancy and birth are safe everywhere.
