Helping Business Owners with Employee Relations Issues 5 Tips Quick Guides – Keeping Staff Motivated Over Christmas. There is a great deal of research that suggests Christmas is the least product period for employees. So how do we combat this? Key advice that business owners must always consider. #1. Ensure that the festive period is acknowledged by getting involved in such activities a Christmas jumper day. #2. Give staff plenty of notice for their departmental parties/company party, ideally on the last day of the working week to avoid any issues with non-attendance the following day. #3. Do not insist employees must attend or put pressure on them if they do not attend. Some may have other family commitments or it could be that parties are not their thing. #4. Encourage flexible working to accommodate parties that fall at difficult times/days or for those who have children where schools often break-up early. #5. Try relaxing one or two rules. This can go a long way to motivating your staff & with it long-term loyalty. These tips not only help to keep staff motivated during the Christmas period, but also helps to maintain a good positive culture where your business is now less likely to see unnecessary absence. As we gear up for the festive season, it’s not just about mince pies and mulled wine – the office Christmas party is a key moment to celebrate team achievements, build connections, and boost morale. With recent news highlighting the rising importance of employee wellbeing, as seen in the UK’s latest workplace survey by CIPD, getting this right is more important than ever. Here’s how HR can make this year’s party inclusive, enjoyable, and aligned with company values: 📍Prioritise Inclusion – The festive season means different things to different people. Choose a venue, theme, and activities that are welcoming and sensitive to all cultures and beliefs. 📍Promote Wellbeing – Ensure the event is a safe space for everyone. With heightened awareness of workplace drinking culture, consider offering non-alcoholic options and a variety of activities beyond just the bar. 📍Clear Communication – Share details early to give people plenty of notice. Include practical info, like transport options and expectations for behaviour, so everyone feels comfortable. 📍Celebrate the Team – Recognise achievements from the year, whether through awards, shout-outs, or personalised thank-you notes. It’s a great way to reinforce a positive company culture. 📍Set the Tone – Remind everyone of your organisation’s values ahead of the event. With a little planning, HR can make the Christmas party a highlight of the year and a powerful tool for strengthening team spirit. What’s your HR team doing to celebrate this year? When is your Christmas party? Christmas office parties are a cherished tradition in many workplaces, Whilst most staff look forward to these events, they can also bring challenges, with numerous reported incidents leading to HR actions or even legal claims. The risks associated with office parties, particularly where alcohol is involved, are well-documented. With the introduction of the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023 (WPA 2023), which imposes new proactive duties on employers to prevent sexual harassment, some may question whether it is worth holding such events at all. Whilst this may be the preferred decision for some employers, it is important to recognise the significant value these gatherings bring. For many employees, especially in workplaces with hybrid working arrangements, social events provide rare opportunities to connect in person and foster team camaraderie. The new legislation does not mean holiday gatherings should be cancelled from your workplace calendar. Instead, careful planning and clear communication can help create positive, inclusive events that align with legal obligations.
