For me, it was those doggone virtual meetings~ Let's discuss this virtual meeting situation we're all facing. As someone who's seen the corporate world from both sides of the camera and studied the psychology behind it, I have some thoughts on what's really going on here. Seeing myself constantly during meetings is a psychological minefield. Unlike vlogging, I edited out the awkward pauses and bad hair days. This was real-time, high-stakes performance art that damaged my self-image and confidence. Speaking into the void. I'm there, sharing my brilliant ideas about HR stuff (sophisticated word use, right? 🤣 ), and all I could see was blank squares/stares or a sea of muted microphones. I was shook! Confidence was fleeting and verbal fillers, "ummmm..," "uh," and "you know what I'm saying?", abundant. This virtual stage adds another layer of complexity, anecdotally for women, especially women of color. We're already navigating a world that doesn't always see or hear us. We're expected to shine through pixelated screens and spotty internet connections. The pressure to be "on" is accurate and exhausting. But here's the truth - I won't let this digital complexity keep me from showing up as my authentic self. So, I've got some strategies I have used to help myself navigate this new normal. I hope they are helpful to you: 1️⃣ Turn off self-view. No need to stare at yourself all day. You look good, friend. 2️⃣ Use speaking points if you need to. There's no shame in being prepared. Jot down your key points and keep them handy. 3️⃣ . Push for "cameras on" during critical meetings. If we're all in it together, we're in this together. 4️⃣ When you can, turn off the camera and take a breather. Self-care isn't selfish; it's necessary. 5️⃣ Although in-person might not always be an option, building relationships is still crucial. Reach out, connect, and network with your team members. It'll make those virtual interactions feel more natural. Don't sweat it if you're new to this remote work life. We're all figuring it out as we go along. Remember, your performance on camera doesn't measure your worth. It's about the value you bring - virtual or otherwise. So stand in your truth, speak your mind, and let your light shine through that webcam. We've come too far to let technology hold us back. It's time to rewrite the rules of engagement and create a virtual workspace that celebrates diversity, authenticity, and authentic human connection. From an organizational development perspective, we need to consider how these virtual environments are shaping our company cultures. Are we fostering inclusivity? Are we allowing space for different communication styles? How can we improve this space? Please put your thoughts in the comments. 👇 👇👇 #SpeakingIntoTheVoid #VirtualDiversity #RewriteTheRules #InclusiveVirtualCulture #AuthenticityMatters

Monday Reflections: As we wrap up this month dedicated to self-care and wellness, I recently stumbled on a post that made me chuckle yet held so much truth which read: “This is your life, and you’re letting people make you unhappy. In your life.” The caption of the post further exclaimed "Baxoshe" (chase them out) 😆 How often do we find ourselves prisoner to other people's opinions, expectations, or even just passing comments that live rent free in our heads ultimately impacting our own mental health and wellness? The truth is, we spend so much energy trying to fit someone else’s mold or worrying about how we’re perceived that we end up sacrificing our own peace of mind. This week, give yourself the permission to stop trying to impress everyone and start living your life on your terms. Now that's a cost effective self care practice. #MondayReflections #ReflectionsCorner #SelfCare #Wellness #Baxoshe

For Mental Health Awareness Month, I wanted to take a moment to share a personal aspect of my journey – living with chronic pain. It’s a reality that’s often overlooked or misunderstood, yet it profoundly impacts every aspect of life – body, mind, and spirit. Over the past few weeks, I’ve consciously taken a step back from work, listening to my body’s cues and allowing it to dictate the pace. As a solopreneur, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the relentless pursuit of productivity, but when faced with chronic pain, even the simplest tasks can become monumental challenges. This experience has been a poignant reminder of the importance of embracing self-care and celebrating the small victories. It’s about recognizing that it’s okay to hit pause and prioritize our well-being. In sharing this, I hope to offer solace to those who may be navigating similar journeys, reminding you that you’re not alone. And to urge everyone to heed the wisdom of their bodies, to listen closely and not to push too far. Together, let’s foster a culture of compassion and understanding, where mental health is valued and prioritized. Because it’s only by lifting each other up that we can truly thrive. . . . #HarmonyInDementia #MentalHealth #SelfCare #MentalHealthMatters #MentalWellness #MentalHealthIsImportant #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #ChronicPain #YouAreNotAlone
