Some reflections on the development of probation practice and thoughts for the future direction.
📢 "Are public expectations of what can be achieved through community supervision realistic and are recommendations being directed to the correct services?" Revolving Doors trustee Tessa Webb OBE worked in the Probation Service for over 40 years, including leading on localism and improving the connectivity between probation and local services when she served as a director of the Probation Chiefs Association. Drawing on her deep-rooted knowledge and experience of the probation service, its staff and those it supports, Tessa has written about the public narratives around probation - and whether it's time for a shift in thinking if we want a service that works for everyone. 🔥 Transforming probation starts with listening to people on all sides of the issue—including the supervision officers who work within the system. Here's a look at our impact at the Probation Officers Professional Association of Indiana (POPAI) Conference. REFORM Alliance connected with over 60 dedicated probation professionals to reimagine the future of community supervision—all thanks to our amazing Indiana State Organizer, Maranda Williams. Our breakout session on implementing best practices for county-administered probation sparked essential conversations about improving our systems to better serve our communities.REFORM Alliance is committed to including all parties in the conversation—justice-impacted individuals, community organizations, legislators, advocates, and supervision officers who work within the walls of the system. Their invaluable input is crucial to driving meaningful change and improving probation and parole practices. Together, we’re making strides toward a better future! I find it hard to believe it has been 10 years since the Probation Institute was formed. It only seems like yesterday. Before it existed, I remember many calls for a probation institute to champion professional issues on behalf of all staff. All of a sudden, and a surprise to most of us, we had one. Unfortunately, it was arguably the profession's most challenging and disruptive period in modern times, and it would be an understatement to say that a lot was going on, everywhere, all at once. Despite the seismic changes that were happening all around it, the PI came into being. The Probation Institute is very different now from the fledgling organisation of a decade ago. No one could deny that probation in England and Wales has been on a bumpy rollercoaster of a journey over the last ten years. The PI is currently chaired by the redoubtable Professor Lorraine Gelsthorpe and from the outset has produced an impressive number of high-quality papers and reports. It regularly produces an excellent publication, Probation Quarterly, edited by Jake Phillips. https://lnkd.in/dRhCN4Sz is free to download and read. Well worth a look. I have always considered the PI to be a progressive organisation, and you only have to look at some of the position papers and publications produced to know that these are very useful to a range of people both in and interested in probation. Over the years, it has been able to consistently bring together a diverse range of very knowledgeable and experienced supporters and advocates of the probation profession. It has consistently presented some unique opportunities for the profession in various events, including one recently concerning professional registration. It has continued to provide appropriate engagement around professional issues that is both thoughtful, nuanced, and constructive. Supporting all those involved in probation, including service users in a way that is distinct from others and therefore of unique value in the probation world. It is great to look and see what the PI has previously achieved in 2024 and look forward at what the next 10 years will bring to our wonderful profession. Fantastic to see this article published in the Irish Probation Journal. It provides information on the development and plans of the CORD (Criminal justice Open Research Dialogue) Partnership. This ‘researcher-policymaker-practitioner partnership’ (R3P) was initially established through a project funded by Ireland’s National Open Research Forum (NORF) and led by the wonderfully collaborative Ian Marder. The CORD partnership exists to support positive social change by embedding a culture of interdisciplinary open research in criminal justice in Ireland and I'm delighted to be a part of it!
Really happy to see this article out in the Irish Probation Journal! With 58 authors from 32 organisations (!) we outline the purpose, principles and research priorities of the CORD Partnership - the new, national research partnership that seeks to embed a culture of interdisciplinary open research in criminal justice in Ireland. We developed these ideas using restorative practices and design thinking, and we wrote the article using an open authorship process. Co-authors include Patrice Mccormack Threase Finnegan-Kessie Jennifer Schweppe Lynsey Black Fionnuala Brennan Tríona Kenny, MA Katharina Kurz Emeline Le Prince Marian Quinn Ruairí Weiner Yvonne Daly Darragh McCashin Kevin Wozniak, Ph.D. Colette Barry Ciara Bracken-Roche, PhD, MA, BSc Avril Brandon, PhD Policing Authority Maria Cleary Dr. Geraldine Cleere Catherine Comiskey Alan Cusack Karl Ducque Niamh Flanagan Joe Garrihy Diarmuid Griffin Dr Ciara Guiney Helen Hall Amanda Haynes The Probation Service Sharron Kelliher Enda Kelly Dympna Kenny Noreen Lacey PhD, CAPM Susan Leahy Niamh McCormack Dr. Lucy Michael John F.
