Charging System Overview: - Most drivers rely on the Bharat AC 001 system: - Equipped with three connector guns, each rated at 3.3 kW - Total system capacity:10 kW - Input: Three-phase low-tension supply (415V); output: Single-phase (220V, 15A) - Each gun connects externally through three pins (Phase, Neutral, Earth). 2. Onboard vs. External Chargers: Onboard Chargers (Integrated in Vehicles): - Simplify charging with direct plug-and-play functionality. - Eliminate the need to carry external equipment, reducing theft and damage risks. - Preferred by drivers for convenience and cost-saving. External Chargers (Offboard Systems): - Require manual connection to EVSE - Drivers face additional burdens of carrying and securing external equipment. - Vulnerable to theft or damage, with repair costs averaging Rs 5000 3. Cost Variations in Charging Models: - Drivers reported a noticeable difference in charging costs depending on the station ownership model: - Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model: - Offers Lower per-unit electricity costs due to government subsidies on government owned land. - Encourages EV adoption by reducing operational expenses for drivers. - Privately Owned Charging Stations - Tend to charge higher per-unit electricity costs due to high land cost. 4. The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has announced a Joint Call for Proposals focused on the development of Electric Vehicle (EV) Sub-systems. Innovators and researchers, in collaboration with industry and academia, can drive technology development and deliver indigenous products for the EV ecosystem. The MeitY-MHI joint call will accelerate the development of indigenous technologies in the EV sector.” The initiative will focus on areas like EV Chargers, Battery Management Systems, Telematics, and Functional Safety, aiming to foster innovation through participation from research institutions, startups, and industry players. Selected proposals will receive financial support from MeitY, while MHI will provide standardization and testing assistance. Overcoming design challenges in fast EV charging infrastructure India's EV infrastructure has seen remarkable growth, with over 12,146 operational public charging stations by February 2024—a staggering 640% increase since 2022. However, to effectively support the rapidly increasing demand, especially for long-distance travel, the expansion of public charging networks must accelerate. The Indian government has set ambitious targets, aiming to have 30% of all vehicles on the road be electric by 2030. Thanks to PSG INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND APPLIED RESEARCH and The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore for inviting me to give a talk on 'Digital innovations for sustainable development'. Sustainability starts with each one of us. However, the biggest contributors to global carbon emission are the transportation, energy, and industry sectors. For China and India, more than half the carbon emission is from the energy sector. Decarbonization of the energy sector starts with efficiency in power generation to electrification or transmission and distribution, low carbon energy using renewable sources, and carbon capture to manage unavoidable emissions. Digital technologies are instrumental to measure, innovate, and develop a closed-loop system for energy sector decarbonization. I spoke about a basket of technologies with a deep dive into 5G, AI, cloud, digital twins. To implement this technology in these charging stations, COSTECH (Kerala State Co-operative Institute of Information Technology, Electronics, and Communication) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with EasyGo, a Chennai-based company. The technology will enable rapid charging for various vehicles, from small cars to trucks. A cloud management system and mobile app have also been developed to streamline payments.
