And that’s a wrap on the 18th #SETPlan Conference in Budapest. I’m proud of the JRC’s role in the SET Plan, which brings scientists, policymakers and industry leaders together to unlock new solutions to Europe’s complex energy challenges. Our need for such joined up thinking becomes more pressing with every year. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to our Hungarian hosts for their warm hospitality, and to our European Commission colleagues and all the SET Plan stakeholders for two days of engaging discussions and collaborative spirit. Here are some of my key conference takeaways: - International cooperation and public engagement are crucial in pursuit of climate neutrality and European competitiveness. - Research and innovation play a critical role in driving the transition to a more circular and sustainable economy. - Cross-thematic cooperation is essential for addressing complex challenges. - The SET Plan can play a key role in supporting industrial policy, such as the upcoming Clean Industrial Deal. - We need to reduce fragmentation in the R&I landscape and focus on technologies where we can maintain and build leadership. - Monitoring and reporting will keep us on track: our annual SET Plan and Clean Energy Technology Observatory reports are invaluable, but we need to go even further. Lastly I'd like to extend a special thank you to my JRC team, particularly Drilona Shtjefni, Teodor Kuzov, Evdokia Tapoglou, Dražen Tumara and Catriona Black for their key contributions to the conference. See you at the next one in Copenhagen? 🔍Panel 7 of the 60th Anniversary International Conference on Sustainability and Sustainable Media 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 In the seventh panel of the 60th Anniversary International Conference, we group scholars from the US, Germany, and the United Kingdom. This panel asks how we can integrate social equity, environmental and human health, ethics, and technologies to create diverse and thriving communities on the urban, regional, and global scale. The presentations address the questions from the perspective of “cultures of technology” which refers here to the values, norms, expectations, and controls that shape how technologies are imagined, designed, used, and replaced. This panel will address some of these cultures and practices in contexts of migration, digital labour, the politics of innovation, and sustainable urban spaces. In their presentations, scholars will highlight how cultures of technology engage with, defy, and reproduce sustainable practices and what we can learn from historically underrepresented groups and regions. For their presentation details, please visit the conference website: https://lnkd.in/ezjuk28M #60thAnniversary #JLM #InternationalConference #AcademicEvent #SustainabilityandSustainableMedia

The High-level expert group’s report on the future of the EU research programme published yesterday delivers many important recommendations to make research and innovation the key to unlock European competitiveness. I welcome the push towards an integrated approach between research and innovation and the EU strategic agenda, focussing on competitiveness, fostering market uptake and leveraging of private investments supporting the scale up of innovative technologies in Europe. Also, the integration of European, national and regional funding is extremely important, aligning strategic objectives and creating complementary funding instruments, and achieving synergies. The support of partnerships is recognised as fundamental in strategic thematic cluster, together with the need for more open, less prescriptive programmes, to be implemented with user friendly and simpler instruments. Regarding in particular European partnerships like Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), the report underlines their value to achieve EU strategic objectives, their ability to leverage considerable private funding. At the same time, it calls to focus on EU competitiveness, to simplify the funding landscape, to align the partnerships’ strategy with Member states’ national funding and enhancing synergies. Overall, I mostly welcome the approach of “Align, act, accelerate” because it emphasises what partnerships – and in particular joint undertakings like CBE JU – are about: align strategies among a wide range of stakeholders, implement joint strategic calls for funding, accelerate EU industries’ competitiveness to impact business, the environment and EU civil society. I am also particularly proud that the CBE JU funded project LigniOx Project H2020 is mentioned as an example of how long-term EU research, development and innovation funding within public-private partnerships can boost competitiveness and sustainability of European industries and help achieve EU’s objectives. https://lnkd.in/eTfyk8Sa Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) European Commission EU Science, Research and Innovation EU Business EU Environment and Climate John Bell Rob Beekers Astrid Ladefoged Dirk Carrez

Innovation Marathon Hackathon The Innovation Marathon Hackathon, a central event of the European University Festival, will be a 72-hour hackathon culminating in October 2025 during the festival itself. However, the journey toward this event will begin as early as March 2025 with an official presentation at the European Parliament. During this ceremony, the festival will be formally announced, marking the start of preparatory work involving universities and researchers from across Europe. Starting in March, participating universities will have the opportunity to form interdisciplinary teams and begin developing innovative solutions to climate challenges such as sustainable energy, waste reduction, and urban resilience. This preliminary work will culminate in the Innovation Marathon in October, where projects will be finalized and presented. The best ideas will be selected for inclusion in the "University Climate Manifesto", a cornerstone document of the festival aimed at influencing policy and promoting a sustainable future. #InnovationMarathon #Hackathon2025 #EuropeanUniversityFestival #Sustainability #ClimateInnovation #RenewableEnergy #WasteReduction #UrbanResilience #ClimateManifesto #SustainableFuture #EuropeanResearch #InterdisciplinaryTeams #UniversityCollaboration #GlobalChallenges #PolicyForChange #CollaborativeInnovation #GreenSolutions

🎉Exciting news for researchers and innovators! The European Commission has unveiled the second strategic plan for Horizon Europe, outlining the key areas where EU research and innovation funding will be directed for the remaining years of the program (2025-2027) 📰. This updated plan focuses on three crucial strategic orientations: Green Transition: Tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution through groundbreaking solutions. Digital Transition: Unlocking Europe's digital potential and ensuring technological leadership. A Stronger Europe: Building a more resilient, competitive, inclusive and democratic Europe. This strategic focus aligns with the current global landscape, emphasising sustainability, technological advancement, and societal well-being. At lomarlabs, we are open to collaborations on EU projects as we see extraordinary opportunities in #maritime innovation. We believe that technological innovation is the only way for the maritime sector to continue growing efficiently and in harmony with the environment, while still maintaining its competitiveness. Stay tuned for the launch of the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2025 in April, which will detail specific funding opportunities!
