Here are 5 things you might not know about Malbec 🍇🍷 1️⃣ Malbec, originating from Bordeaux but thriving in Argentina's Mendoza region, epitomizes versatility, evolving from a Bordeaux blending grape to a star in Argentina's wine scene. 2️⃣ With its deep color, velvety texture, and flavors ranging from ripe blackberry to plum, Malbec wines enchant wine enthusiasts worldwide, making them perfect for both casual sipping and elegant dining. 3️⃣ Malbec's journey from France to Argentina showcases its resilience, thriving in the arid climate and mineral-rich soils of Mendoza despite challenges like disease and pests. 4️⃣ The origin of Malbec's name is a matter of debate, with theories ranging from honoring a Hungarian peasant to referencing a bird's fondness for premature grape feasting, giving rise to the term "mal bec," meaning "bad beak" in French, and adding an intriguing layer to its story. 5️⃣ Every April 17th, wine lovers worldwide unite to celebrate Malbec World Day, commemorating the day in 1853 when Argentine President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento made it his mission to transform the country's wine industry. This historic decree marked a pivotal moment for Argentine viticulture and paved the way for Malbec to become the country's flagship grape variety. Thus, April 17th holds special significance as a day to honor Argentine wine culture and the remarkable journey of Malbec on the global stage. #BeverageIndustry #BeverageBusiness #BevAlc #WineBusiness #SupplyChain #ClaretSolutions

Steffen Schindler on how Deutsches Weininstitut, The German Wine Institute i.e. Wines of Germany worldwide is tapping into new markets while building on its Riesling heritage. Over the past few decades, Germany’s reputation as a global wine powerhouse has steadily grown, turning a once-regional industry into an international phenomenon. While Riesling remains the crown jewel of German vineyards, an impressive diversification is underway with varieties such as Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), and even lesser-known gems like Silvaner (great for food-pairing!) gaining traction internationally. This deliberate focus on varietal expansion, alongside innovative marketing efforts, has allowed German wines to carve out a significant presence in key markets like the UK, the US, and emerging regions in Asia. In this interview, Steffen Schindler, Director of Marketing at Wines of Germany reflects on the milestones achieved, the challenges of competing on the international stage, and the exciting potential for German wines in markets across the world.

The northward shift of wine-producing areas in Europe is often attributed to climate change, as rising temperatures create conditions favorable for grape cultivation in regions previously considered unsuitable. However, this shift is not solely determined by climate. Terroir—encompassing soil, topography, and microclimate—remains the cornerstone of high-quality wine production. Additionally, centuries of expertise in grape farming and winemaking, deeply rooted in traditional wine regions, provide invaluable knowledge that cannot be easily replicated in newer areas. Thus, while climate change may expand the geographical range of viticulture, the success of wine production in northern regions will depend on their ability to adapt to terroir challenges and bridge gaps in generational know-how.

Sharing Roberta Boscolo’s fascinating post on the optimal wine growing regions 🍷 - Already drifting Northward as a direct consequence of climate change. Great for Norfolk, UK where I live and where vineyards are growing exponentially, but we do need to stabilise our climate forthwith if the changes are not to become unsustainable. This means urgently reducing emissions now! #SustainabilityLeadership SDG 11, 13, 14 & 15
