Most companies believe that cost-cutting is the key to procurement success... but is it really?" The industry often prioritizes the lowest bid, leading to short-term savings but long-term headaches. This approach can result in compromised quality, supply disruptions, and strained relationships with suppliers. 💡 Notable Method: Enter the “Value-Based Procurement” strategy, focusing on quality, reliability, and partnership over mere price. 🌟 Leader Example: Look to Unilever's CPO, Willem Ulijen, who champions sustainable sourcing and long-term relationships, proving that investing in the right partners pays off in spades! Let’s shift our mindset: it's not just about saving dollars; it's about creating value. 💪✨ #Procurement #SupplyChain #ValueBasedProcurement #Leadership #Sustainability #Innovation

My time in Remko van Hoek supply chain procurement class has been an extremely insightful experience ! As my minor is in supply chain I have a profound interest in learning the topics that make up the supply chain. During our time in class we learned the details of the ordering cycle, supplier relationship management, and strategic sourcing. My biggest take away from these topics has definitely been procurements alignment with the business to drive success. Procurement is it's own force in supply chain and it had no crossed my mind that they must have the same goals as the business to reach their goals. Now that I have this information I realize how important it is in procurement to have your desires for the future planned out and coordinated with your business to reach your goals together. As well as passing information and data. My greatest dream for my future in procurement would be to be able to lead the team in procurement that works with the business to keep our goals aligned. I find many aspects of procurement interesting and one of my favorites it SCRM so I would as well dream to work on a team that works with the suppliers to create meaningful and advantageous relationships.
It was great to be able to feature supply chain dreams and ambitions of today's supply chain students in the final chapter of the book about Hall of Famers. Thanks to these future leaders the prospects for the profession are great. Grateful to have been able to teach future leaders this semester and to learn about, maybe part inspire, their aspirations. Many great dreams and ambitions coming our way - just what we need! What are yours? https://lnkd.in/g2iXghfp

The emphasis on savings as the primary performance metric in procurement is a reflection of a limited strategic vision within the organisation. Cost-saving shouldn’t overshadow the broader goal of creating value through innovation, strong supplier relationships, and strategic partnerships. Strategic Vision Deficiency: Many procurement teams are stuck in a tactical mindset, focusing solely on immediate savings rather than long-term value creation. There’s a need for a paradigm shift from transactional to strategic thinking in procurement. If the current procurement team cannot evolve beyond a savings-centric approach, it may be time to reassess and either develop the existing team’s strategic capabilities or bring in new talent with a strategic outlook.(It is also naïve to think other stakeholders such as finance, engineering, projects, sustainability actually advocate for procurement to deliver beyond the established narrow metrics set by the CPO/CFO/CEO or other senior leaders) Implementing training programs focused on strategic procurement, supplier relationship management, and value creation can help in developing the current team and wider stakeholders. Flipping the Script? The suggestion to ask suppliers “What are we doing that costs you money?” is a tactical step towards a more collaborative and strategic approach. If the current team - and stakeholders - are unable or unwilling to adapt to a strategic role of procurement, it may indeed be necessary to change the people or bring in new talent who can lead this transformation.

💡 **Savings Still Rule in Procurement: Time to Flip the Script!** In today's Procurement landscape, delivering value goes beyond just savings, yet they remain the top performance metric, popular among senior leadership. Cost avoidance follows closely behind. But let’s be honest—many Procurement teams feel like they’ve exhausted all the traditional avenues. So, what's the next lever to pull? 🔄 Rather than using the HOW (supplier relationships) to drive the WHAT (savings), let's achieve our savings goals (WHAT) while staying true to our commitment to strong supplier partnerships (HOW). 💬 **Here’s an idea: ask your key suppliers one powerful question: “What are we doing that costs you money?”** Imagine the possibilities when you are: 1. **Being Curious:** Engage with your suppliers and truly listen to their experiences. 2. **Being Open:** Understand their perspective and be ready to critically look inwards and explore new ways to reduce the costs they incur doing business with you. 3. **Being Collaborative:** Foster a win-win relationship that not only meets your savings targets but also strengthens your supplier partnerships. Give it a try. Flip the script and test it! 🌟 --- #Procurement #Savings #SupplierRelationships #Innovation #Collaboration #Leadership

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to learn from Remko Van Hoek this semester. The insights I gained on critical supply chain topics will be invaluable as I progress in my marketing career. Dr. Van Hoek concluded the semester by posing two thought-provoking questions: “What is one significant learning for you about supply chain from this semester, and what is your vision for the future of supply chain?” One key takeaway for me was that effective negotiation relies on careful timing, active listening, strategic pauses, clear objectives, and a delicate balance between addressing others’ needs and preserving relationship capital to achieve optimal results. Looking ahead, my aspiration is to integrate supply chain strategies with marketing initiatives to foster seamless customer experiences and enhance satisfaction through innovation.

Having someone so well versed in supply chain teaching is amazing within itself but having someone who can make procurement an interesting and engaging topic as well as giving me lessons I can use in the future. That's one of a kind. I am so grateful that Dr. Remko Van Hoek got to take me on the journey of procurement and I can't wait to use what I was taught out of the classroom and into the real world. When learning about procurement I took note of how wide and deep procurement can be not only for an organization but also for the world. Especially when learning about sustainability as well as supplier diversity it was so eye-opening how I could not only be a good force for the business but also a good force for the world. What I dream of for a supply chain, specifically procurement, is a more interconnected and visible supply chain going from your 3rd tier suppliers to your 1st tier suppliers. I want a supply chain so visible that we make sure we’re following ethical and sustainable goals because this will not only support the business but it will help make the world a more honest and ethical place.
