A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a list of the fastest-growing companies in the world. Naturally, I started digging, trying to understand their secret? Is it their products? Their marketing? Or just luck? Turns out, it’s none of those things. Here’s what caught my attention: They didn’t just invest in tech; they invested in simplifying their teams' lives. 1 - They didn’t just buy tech; they rewired how they worked. 2 - They made it easier for teams to get the right info at the right time. 3 - They focused on clarity, speed, and action. It wasn’t about complexity—it was about simplicity. And that’s the thing no one tells you about growth: The more streamlined your systems are, the easier it becomes to scale. So, here’s a question to think about: If your business grew 10x tomorrow, would your current systems keep up—or slow you down?

Q: What kind of open source founders usually work with me on positioning? A: Second-time founders. A serious trend I've noticed in the type of founders who work with me is that they're usually (though not always) second-time founders, and they are usually over 35. It's not necessarily their second VC-backed company, or their second product company -- but the type of people who tend to hire me are those who've built a company (successfully or not) before. When it's not your first rodeo, you tend to value strategy more. You tend to value positioning more. 🤔 --

Last week I was in Dubrovnik for MicroConf, with hundreds of other founders. As is often the case with conferences, it’s the chats you have with other attendees that make the biggest impression. I had breakfast one morning with a founder who was about to embark on building a new product, something entirely different to the software he’d already built with his team. And instead of looking to sell his main company, he was attempting to build both products with the same team. This is like building a company on ‘hard mode’ – and I said to him I felt that trying to build two very different companies could easily result in creating two products that struggle. He’d had multiple offers to buy his main business but had no interest in selling, because of how much he loved his team. When you bootstrap a company it takes a LONG time to build a good team. Hiring is really tough, even if you’ve been in charge of hiring in a life before becoming a founder. What’s so tricky is that when you make mistakes it’s often hard to understand how to correct them next time. It took me probably 5 years before I felt I had a process in place to hire the exact team I wanted to be surrounded by. So while I have no interest in developing a completely new product, I absolutely align with that founder when it comes to acquisition. I love my team too much. If you’re a founder that finds running a business a grind and can’t wait for acquisition, look around you. 'Hire slow and fire fast' might be repeated a little too often, but it’s a cliche in business for a reason. Take your time and you’ll find a team that amaze you every day. Hopefully it doesn’t take five years to perfect your hiring process though.
