Here’s the slidedeck for the talk I gave on Linkedin for Accountants. It’s a nuanced talk specifically around advocacy. The talk was for a global group of ACCA accounting professionals. Three talking points that arose from the session were: 👍 Liking vs Commenting. Is there more value in adding your thoughts to a post (let me know) 🎨 Emojis. Liven it up by sprinkling a few colourful eye-catching emojis around your profile. 💼 Contributions. There are a number of places to record your contributions to the profession; Publications, Experience, Volunteering. You can see visual examples in the deck. I'm just starting my week. And my New Year. I’ll blame, as usual, my two favourite excuses for my lateness: the fun little juggle of being a mum-of-small-human + a freelancer. This year, I’m also adding some of the blame to the dual-culture home I live in: In Spain, Christmas celebrations stretch right through to January 6th with the Día de los Reyes Magos or Three Kings' Day 👑👑👑. They were really late to the party it seems, just like the Spaniards I live with. They eat a Roscon for breakfast ( 📷 below for the one I got in a post-run treat bag this weekend!)   And then there’s more presents, often left in the recipient’s shoes 🎄👑 👠 So today, I’m finally and slowly looking ahead to 2025: My Q1 is looking a little like this - 1️⃣ Webinar Alert: On 31st January, I’m running a webinar with Hub Cymru Africa for organisations who are just starting out in trust and foundation fundraising. I've always been a data-driven person. In my business life, numbers tell the story, and that's what helped me build trust and attract investment. Thought it would translate seamlessly to my nonprofit work... but it hasn't. Here's the thing... when I started sharing my nonprofit passion projects on LinkedIn, my engagement nosedived. 🤓 Turns out, heartstrings and spreadsheets don't always mix like I'd hoped. But I'm not one to give up easily. Being self-taught and unconventional is kinda my superpower. So I went deeper. Here's what I realized 👇🏾 🎯 Your story matters. Data is my backbone, but without the "why" behind it, the emotional connection gets lost. 🎯 Impact is king. My supporters are here because I SHOW them the difference their contributions make, not just talk about it. 🎯Social good is still business. Attracting supporters online requires the same savvy used to attract clients – understanding my audience, offering value, and building relationships. LinkedIn might be more 'buttoned-up' than other socials, but that doesn't mean the heart has to be left out. I'm reframing my approach – blending my data expertise with compelling stories and tangible results. 💭 Anyone else struggled with this balancing act? 💭 What's worked for you when talking about passion projects in a professional setting? #datadweller #NPO #SOCIALBUSINESS

I just attended LinkedIn for Nonprofits #ImpactSummit! There was a focus on a few things, including how to tell stories to drive impact. Here are some takeaways that stood out to me: -Spend time understanding dynamic. Thinking about your audience, not just you. Remember everyone else you're talking to also has a story. -Short, declarative sentences tells them what to hold onto. -There's you, me, but that collective WE can be really impactful. -Turn an obstacle into a mountain/hill and just climb it. -Important skills = critical thinking, problem solving, communication AND curiosity, empathy, resilience. Focusing my story telling on what the audience actually needs/wants and getting away from what I think they need or what I want to share has been a huge shift for me in the past year. It was great to hear the presenters solidify that. Feeling inspired to share more impactful stories and help guide others to do the same. 💡

How can you be sure that the organizations you support still align with the values that matter to you? No organization is immune to mission drift, so supporters need to be willing to do their homework. “What are those beliefs that simply won’t die because of availability and confirmation bias? Here are but a few. The more we ask, the more we get. The original sin in fundraising is believing people give because we ask. If only humans were that simple. Donors are all the same. This isn’t spoken but looking at how much of the sector operates, it seems to be the default, unspoken assumption. One-size-fits-all treatment. Or, the random nth test that implicitly assumes everyone in the test group is the same. That “statistical significance” is some sort of gold standard. There is an enormous amount of noise in any direct marketing test that significance testing is not sensitized too. Make the sample large enough and any difference, however small, can be flagged as significant. One of our colleagues ran a 15-way split test in the mail. There were 5 different “big ideas” each with three variations. Results showed big, statistical differences across the 15 treatments. The agency had an instant narrative to fit the results and hey, it was statistically significant. The problem? There was a rather major screw up along the way and everybody got the exact same mailing. Lots and lots of noise. Especially if the test ideas are random. That people give because of emotion. Emotion is the goal, not the cause. People do not give because we made them sad in the appeal. They give because if we made them sad, their goal is to not be sad. If they believe based on past experience or what you convey in the appeal that giving is the best way to feel better they’ll give to achieve that emotional goal. But, just making people feel something with a solicitation is one hand clapping – at best. Generational differences are real and important. Another blue in the face moment here for Agitator Editors and DVer’s. We’ve debunked this generational mumbo jumbo many times over but frankly, it’s Don Quixote tilting at windmills.”
