Last week some of the Crewjoy team was at INNOVATEwest, a technology and innovation-focused event in Vancouver. For me there were many outcomes from attending, and one of them was seeing the various parts of a team operating in unison. ✳ This is a picture of my co-founder Josh, who is not normally the face of our company, representing Crewjoy in a recorded interview conversation. ✳ He's talking with Andrea Bischoff, representing one of our partners avantage, about how Crewjoy is supporting their process of building high-performing consulting teams. ✳ Somewhere in the background is Shiela, our Community Manager, sparking great conversations about how Crewjoy is using AI to build more human-focused workplaces where engagement, joy, and productivity skyrocket. ✳ I could be found building new relationships with partners and customers. Often with individuals brought over by Trevor Kray of Avantage, after he helped them strategize on their pressing business challenges. ✳ And we were privileged to be partnering at the event with friends like Accelerate Okanagan, The Mullings Group (Search Canada), Tourism Kelowna, and Interpix Design Inc. I mention all of this not as a description of what we've been up to, but because of how an event like this is a great microcosm of a healthy and productive team: Each person or part working in tandem with the others for shared success. That's what this felt like, and it's what we hope every team can experience. All of these people, partners, and activities activating strengths to better achieve outcomes. This was one event where that happened, but for our (and any) team to succeed, it needs to be happening all the time. That's what we built Crewjoy for! Connecting the Dots… That was our Summer Offsite theme this year. 🤩 At awork, we have many great things going for us, as well as some challenges and opportunities ahead. Realizing what those are, where we want to go, and how we can best utilize our team’s strengths to unlock the next level of growth is what we spent the last week on. We kicked off with a keynote by Tobi that provided a high-level overview of these dots and the strategic direction. We then had Frederik Fleck join us remotely to share his invaluable insights into the startup funding situation from an investor perspective. Bernadette Hamann and Marvin Müller from OMR Reviews made their way up from Hamburg to talk about their perspective on the SaaS market and how companies are purchasing software at the moment. Julia Glöckner and Lucas Bauche shared strategic updates on a more focused customer profile as well as some ideas for what awork could look like in the future. After all these input sessions, it was finally time for the team to connect the dots. We set out and defined the projects we need to work on next quarter to reach the goals we’ve set for ourselves. We put up boards with the big topics we need to work on, then gave the team time to add ideas, questions, and thoughts to every project. In smaller groups, we then evaluated and prioritized all the ideas on the boards, worked on more concrete project plans for the next three months, and presented them to the rest of the team. What really impressed me: 👉 The number and level of questions from the team to our external speakers. 👉 The participation and motivation of every team member throughout those intense days. 👉 How well the agenda worked out, from high-level strategy to concrete projects, with everyone being involved in every step. 👉 How smoothly and hassle-free we managed to pull everything off. Therefore, I wanted to give big kudos to the entire team. 😍 Our offsites are a big part of our culture, and at the same time, they only work out so well because of this awesome culture we’re creating together. 𝙏𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 It’s actually a bit of a cliché, isn’t it? 🤔 But I have to say, when it comes to my team at the Contabo Group, it couldn’t be more accurate. 😍 Last week, just after returning from vacation, I found myself back in beautiful Hamburg, where I spent an incredibly productive, creative, and fun time with my People & Culture Recruiting - Employer Branding team. 🤗 BTW: A second home in Hamburg might just be worth it! 😅 After a great evening together to kick off our workshop days, we dove into key topics and projects to set ourselves up for success in 2025. We also got creative again, making new videos — complete with fun behind-the-scenes clips! 🎬 Every time, I’m reminded of how much better it is to tackle these things together in person rather than just through digital meetings. The time we spend together is always fantastic and strengthens our team bond every time. 💪🏻 𝙎𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚’𝙨 𝙢𝙮 𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙧: Invest time in in-person team workshops. It is time to celebrate my first year at FREENOW for Business! 🎉 It is also time to take a step back. Yesterday, I used up the last one of the box of 48 sachets of yeast that I bought in bulk in March 2020 as COVID hit, and South Africa entered its first hard lockdown. When I chucked the cardboard box into the recycling, it felt symbolic. Yes, that sachet was past its expiry date. And yes, it still worked. Around the same time, we made the hard but necessary decision to shut down our Umuzi.org studios in downtown Johannesburg and send our learners and our team home. We didn’t have a plan. We weren’t sure if we’d be back in 6 weeks or 12 weeks or a year.  Our priority in that moment centred on keeping our learner community safe and enabling their learning. But we certainly intended to return. By June we had relinquished our lease and four years later, we are forever changed - a fully remote-by-choice organisation. There are many reasons for that, which I won’t go into now but in 2024, we have a team of 40+ people, working across 6 countries and our learner numbers have grown exponentially. We are also on a continual quest to refine and define what being remote-by-choice means for us and to find intentional ways to create alignment and connection in our team. We know that this is key for us if we are to continue building what is now a global organisation. Instead of blocked toilets, queuing for the urn and water outages in Jeppestown, we now battle timezone differences, internet connectivity in multiple locations and live-in families who don’t take our meetings quite as seriously as we do. Aside from anything else, it has certainly reinforced Umuzi’s internal culture of embracing one another as whole people with full and diverse lives, as opposed to 9-5 employees. Being fully remote doesn’t mean we don’t see each other in real life - just that we have to be intentional about the who, how and where of those moments. And we are. This year, for our annual Umuzi week (Uweek) we spent 3 full days in nature together, reflecting on our strategy, our growth, values and challenges. We cooked together, laughed and cried and left dirty, stretched and exhausted. But the alignment and connection was just what we needed to help us prepare and build for another big year. This team blows me away every day.

🌟 Mastering Time Management for Events 🌟 As part of my work at Accelerace, I’m responsible for producing both physical and digital events. In this role, time management is absolutely essential! ⏰ Previously, I relied on “Countdown Timer 2.0” to manage presentation timings. While it worked, it was Windows-only and limited to running just one timer at a time. For someone juggling multiple moving parts during events, that simply wasn’t cutting it. 🚀 Last Monday, during our matchmaking event with Nordic Mentor Network For Entrepreneurship - NOME I tested Stagetimer.io—a fantastic commercial product that allows you to manage multiple events, plan schedules in advance, and even share live schedules with your team. It worked like a charm! But then, I thought: Surely there must be an open-source alternative? After all, there usually is, right? And voilà—there is! I discovered OnTime, an incredible open-source tool that does it all—and it’s completely free! 🙌 Now, I’m like a kid on Christmas morning, eagerly awaiting our next event so I can put OnTime to the test! 🎉 What tools do you use for time management during events?
