Rawalpindi: Under the ‘Clean Punjab’ initiative, Rawalpindi’s waste management in 17 tehsils has been handed over to private companies, with services starting December 1. The remaining areas — Pind Dadan Khan, Khewra, Kallar Kahar, and Choa Saidan Shah — are expected to complete this process by January 1. To boost public involvement in the ‘Clean Punjab’ initiative, the government has launched the ‘Clean Rawalpindi’ app and a toll-free number, 1139, for residents to report waste issues and get updates on collection services. Minister Rafiq explained that the program’s goal is a strong local government across Punjab. In the new system, garbage will be collected from homes, placed in containers, and taken to temporary transfer stations before reaching main dumping sites. Additionally, four-wall enclosures for waste will be built in villages, each serving four union councils. Almost every tehsil will have a transfer station, ensuring garbage is sent to dumping points the same day. Minister Rafiq emphasized that the Punjab government is providing all necessary resources to ensure the success of the waste management system, stressing that there will be no compromise on cleanliness in the cities and villages. Visited the Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill site, a key infrastructure in Sri Lanka’s solid and hazardous waste management efforts. As urban areas generate significant waste, facilities like Aruwakkalu are essential in addressing this growing challenge.🍃 Although still under construction, the site is operational with systems in place for managing gas emissions and treating leachate, demonstrating early steps toward comprehensive waste management.♻️ #WasteManagement #SanitaryLandfill #EnvironmentalProtection #SriLanka

The special economic zones (SEZs) of CPEC, though fruitful for Pakistan, also come with their own challenges. Muazam Ali discusses the case of the Allama Iqbal Industrial City situated in Faisalabad and the gap in the waste management policies within this project. The city is already facing problems with inefficient solid waste disposal and municipal waste management, which is causing serious health and environmental hazards for the people.
