👉 Check out this study! 🥑 Is a food system transformation possible, and what does this food transformation mean? ´The Big Food Redesign´, written by the MacArthur Foundation might offer a glimpse of what our food system may look like in the future. 🥕 Amongst other interesting points, the study highlights ecosystem thinking: “A key component is moving from looking at individual ingredients in isolation to understanding the wider ecosystems they belong to. This means designing in partnership with farmers to ensure that the reality of evolving farm systems is considered.” The study goes beyond by offering concrete steps on how to achieve this. 👩🌾 A most insightful and easy read that is beautifully designed. A great source of inspiration for #ReGen55! a collaborative effort between AGREA Agricultural Systems and ProFound that aims to create knowledge interchange between actors in the food & ingredients value chains. 🔬 👨🔬 Scientists agree that beyond a certain temperature range, the yields of the crops we grow as food will be severely affected. It is therefore important to rethink our #foodsystem 🍉 🥗 , understanding the interactions and dependencies involved in achieving food security that respects the environment and safeguards mother nature. This requires, among other things, political decision-makers and stakeholders to be aware of the urgency of the situation, and to promote sustainable agriculture, the development of local farming, the reduction of #foodwaste, the diversity of foods in our dishes, etc.... 🔭 So, it was with a view to participating in this rethinking that I took a 5-week course on the #Food_system organized by the Netherlands Food Partnership and the Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation. 😇 It was a unique opportunity for me to get feedback from professionals, policy-makers from national and international governments, professionals working in development organizations, NGOs, the private sector, and research and educational institutions from all over the world. Thanks to Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation Netherlands Food Partnership #foodsystems #onlinelearning

𝐃𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐀 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐭. We developed a handbook for a self-organized workshop on degrowth and food system transformation. The workshop is a two- to four-hour process where participants engage in open-minded and critical reflection regarding food systems and their relationship to the growth-based economy. The goal is for participants to consider the links between the struggle for more just and ecologically viable food systems and the core ideas of a degrowth transformation and, through this, to think about strategies to overcome the obstacles to a food system transformation rooted in societies’ current pursuit of endless economic growth. The handbook was developed by Guilherme Raj, Jacob Smessaert, Julia Spanier, Laura van Oers and Dr. Leonie Guerrero Lara as part of the ERC- and NWO-funded UNMAKING project, which researched whether and how agrifood grassroots initiatives unmake environmentally disruptive institutions and practices that are deeply ingrained in capitalist societies. Do you think this workshop could be useful for your community supported agriculture initiative or other grassroots collective, movement or organization? The handbook is free to download and available in English, German, Dutch and Spanish. No More ‘Bla Bla Bla’? Why Meaningful Dialogue Drives Real Change I’m thrilled to see this timely article by AGNES KALIBATA and David Nabarro, highlighting the transformative power of multi-stakeholder #dialogues in reshaping our global food systems. The 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit was a powerful testament to how these dialogues can foster inclusivity, urgency, and collaboration—all crucial for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals through food. At EAT, we are proud to have been a founding partner, alongside WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), in piloting the Food Systems Dialogues, with David Nabarro as our convenor. These dialogues have proven critical in co-creating solutions with diverse stakeholders, and we continue to harness their potential today. As we approach the launch of #EATLancet 2.0, we’re co-hosting virtual dialogues with our partners—engaging key constituencies including farmers, cities, consumers, and the finance sector. These conversations will crystallize solutions and create an opportunity for real collaboration and meaningful change, culminating in co-authored EAT-Lancet 2.0 stakeholder briefs. The power of dialogue was also evident in the recent #StrategicDialogue on the future of EU Agriculture initiated by Ursula von der Leyen, where key food systems actors achieved a historic consensus in less than a year—a clear sign of what can be accomplished when meaningful conversations lead to real action. 🌍 Uncovering the True Cost of Food: Insights from The State of Food and Agriculture 2024 🌾 The FAO’s State of Food and Agriculture 2024 builds on last year’s findings, underscoring the importance of true cost accounting to make agrifood systems more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient. The 2023 report revealed that agrifood systems activities, while generating societal benefits, also impose hidden economic, social, and environmental costs amounting to roughly 10% of global GDP. The 2024 report delves deeper, providing updated data and a detailed breakdown of costs linked to unhealthy diets and non-communicable diseases across 156 countries. Through six agrifood system categories and case studies, the report highlights the uneven benefits and costs of transforming food systems and the need for targeted policy interventions. Importantly, it calls for inclusive stakeholder consultations to address power imbalances and guide strategic action. Only through cross-sectoral partnerships—from producers to consumers—can we reshape agrifood systems to benefit people and planet alike. #FAO #TrueCost #SustainableFoodSystems #SDGs #CrossSectoral #ZeroHunger
