"What we're doing right now is unique, and there's no institute like this in the world." https://lnkd.in/eXN_ya4U We helped Dr. Breiman's new institute create its key strategies. The Institute's goal is to combine work in infectious diseases and oncology - two very different disciplines - into a single integrated domain of research. A key strategy is that while the research is fundamental and exploratory, it is goal-oriented. That is an atypical approach in fundamental research. Managing that requires a very participative form of leadership. The institute, which is called the Infectious Diseases and Oncology Research Institute (IDORI) has the goal of substantially reducing the burden of cancer and infectious diseases, beginning in the African continent. #agility #leadership

Together with the former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole; Prof. Avram Denburg of SickKids Canada; and my excellent and superb supervisor, Prof. Beverley Essue, we just published a framework that could support improved access to childhood cancer medicines in Nigeria (and similar settings) through the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines. This Platform launched by World Health Organization and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital offers hope for millions of children living with cancer in low-income settings. However, countries like Nigeria are yet to access the platform due to, amongst others, the lack of an implementation framework. Based on our findings, our proposed framework emphasizes a collaborative, partner-driven approach that leverages existing healthcare structures while promoting capacity strengthening at primary care levels. There is also the need to balance strategic planning with actionable interventions, active engagement with local experts and ensuring that efforts translate into tangible improvements in medicine accessibility for children in need. The article is published in PLOS Global Public Health and is freely accessible to all HERE: https://lnkd.in/gm6R4Gtv #Cancer #GlobalHealth #Nigeria #PublicHealth #HealthPolicy #PLOSGPH #OpenScience

Earlier this week we met with Nicola Ehau, Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora's Regional Commissioner for Te Manawa Taki/Midland to have an important kōrero on the challenges ahead for our region. We all know that cancer rates are increasing and that, in just 25 years, 1 in 2 New Zealanders will be diagnosed. But another unfortunate reality is that our region faces startling inequitable access to treatment. The Waikato and Bay of Plenty have the highest rural Māori population in New Zealand. With an area this vast, it is not surprising that we also have high rates of "did not attend medical appointments", a statistic that must change. These are the challenges so what are the solutions? One key focus to meet the growing demand is by focusing on maintaining health stability and collaborating across service providers to reduce the strain on hospitals. "The Cancer Society is committed to expanding services to reach more people and ensuring equitable access to treatment. We are preparing to meet rising demand by actively partnering with communities and stakeholders through shared navigation services," says Saffron-Moana M., Head of Cancer Care (pictured below right). Also in the discussion were Cancer Society Iwi Relations Manager Charlie Poihipi, Cancer Society Waikato/Bay of Plenty Chief Executive Helen Carter (CMInstD), and Head of Cancer Care Saffron-Moana M.. #waikato #bayofplenty #easternbayofplenty #cancernz #equitynz #cancercare #cancerequity #newzealand #healthnz #healthcare

In my professional opinion Roche's commitment to advancing breast cancer care in Africa is commendable. Their groundbreaking treatments and support for research have significantly improved outcomes for patients. As highlighted in recent discussions, partnering with the private sector is crucial for integrating cancer-related services into Universal Health Coverage. Together, we can address the alarming rate of breast cancer deaths in Africa and create a healthier future for women. They have made significant contributions to the field, including: * Developing innovative treatments: Roche has developed several groundbreaking treatments for breast cancer, including Herceptin, Perjeta, and Kadcyla. These drugs have helped to improve outcomes for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. * Supporting research and development: Roche has invested heavily in research and development to advance our understanding of breast cancer and develop new treatments. * Advocating for patients: Roche has been a strong advocate for patients with breast cancer, working to improve access to care and support services. In recent years, Roche has been involved in several studies investigating new approaches to breast cancer treatment. For example, they are studying the use of immunotherapy to treat triple-negative breast cancer, a particularly aggressive form of the disease. #breastcancer #healthcare #UICC #WorldCancerCongress #WCC2024
Head- Policy, Population Health & Health Systems Strengthening, Area Africa Pharma International. Specialist Oncologist. Ubuntu in Healthcare: Strengthening Systems, and Driving Collaborative Impact across Africa.
Did you know that in Africa, 1 in 2 women succumb to breast cancer within five years of diagnosis? This staggering statistic not only causes immense personal loss but also significantly impacts families, communities, and African economies (GDP effect estimated at 0.4 to 0.7%, impact reaching up to 2% when accounting for families and caregivers). But there's hope! By enhancing the standard of care for women's health, we can save millions of dollars and provide comprehensive support to women throughout their lives. A strategic financial investment in breast cancer care can be a game-changer, serving as a cornerstone for all oncology care and addressing other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This also strengthens healthcare systems overall. I was honoured today to co-host a roundtable discussion with Julie S. Torode at the #WCC2024 that brought together key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to explore innovative multi-sectoral partnerships: Miriam Mutebi, MD,MSc,FACS , Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu , Kevin Anis Massoudi & Dr. Mary Nyangasi-Onyango, MD. The goal? To tackle the inequities in breast cancer outcomes by integrating cancer-related services into Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Thank you Michael Oberreiter for kindly opening the session and providing #Roche position on #partnerships to achieving #UHC Together, we can address the inequities in breast cancer outcomes and create a healthier future for women across Africa. Thank you to everyone who participated and shared their insights. Let's keep the momentum going! #HealthcareInnovation #NCDs2025 #ValueofHealthcareInvestment #RocheAfrica

👩 We are proud to share this "Filtered in a nutshell" video, explained by our Advocacy and Project Coordinator, Anamaria Suciu in less than 1 minute. 🗣 "Our project contributes to the Beating Cancer Plan by bringing together civil society so that we can learn from the successes of the tobacco control movement and make sure all these harmful products (alcohol, tobacco, unhealthy food, and drinks) are regulated at the EU level." 🗣 "If Filtered is successful and the Europe Beating Cancer Plan is implemented fully, with all the legislative proposals, fewer people will develop cancer. It is really as simple and powerful as that." 💡 In collaboration with the Smoke Free Partnership, European Heart Network (EHN), International Youth Health Organization, Advocacy Center LIFE and Woman Health and Family Planning Ukraine, the Filtered project supports the EU Cancer Plan and aims to stimulate collaborative advocacy, at European level for the prevention of NCDs. #EUCancerPlan European Commission European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) EuroHealthNet EASL | The Home of Hepatology

When it comes to alcohol, less is better. Same goes for every health-harming product we intend to consume, like tobacco or junk food. But the responsibility should not rest solely on individuals. These products are aggressively marketed and readily available around the clock. People have a right to be informed about the risks they face, and governments must take effective action to protect their citizens. It's essential to create an environment where the healthy choice is the easiest choice. Through the Filtered project, we add another brick to EU's efforts to advance critical legislation, including taxation and providing information on labels. Alcohol, tobacco, and unhealthy food and drinks share many common issues, and with Filtered, we are exploring these areas as well as our differences.

Effective screening and accurate and early diagnosis contribute to building resilient healthcare systems as they help save costs and resources. By enabling care at the earliest possible stage, they improve therapy outcomes and are a crucial public health strategy. In breast cancer for instance, diagnosis at an early stage is strongly associated with cancer survival. Depending on tumor subtype, between 83% and 96% of patients diagnosed at an early stage will survive at least 5 years, compared with only 10%-39% when diagnosed at an advanced stage. Join this 👇 fantastic panel as they discuss how Africa can implement early diagnosis and comprehensive public health surveillance & response systems for priority diseases, conditions and events. ⚡This week on the Rural Road to Health we hear from Caitriona Casey Crawford who is working with The Farming Community Network and Macmillan Cancer Support on the Rural Communities Cancer Project in Northern Ireland. 💡"The Farming Community Network is a voluntary organization that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of farmers. It is located throughout England and Wales, starting up in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Charity set up for farmers, by farmers." 💡"Rural communities cancer project is a UK wide partnership with UK Macmillan cancer support. Aims to raise awareness of cancer among farming communities and improve the knowledge and understanding of cancer in communities." 💡"Northern Ireland strategy for cancer care highlighted three main barriers to cancer care for rural communities: 1) access to services, 2) access to travel and 3) scheduling of appointment times." 💡"Available research and data does not reflect what is seen in practice and what is happening in rural communities. We need better statistics on late cancer presentations based on geography or data on the psychological and financial impact of having to receive treatment far from home. How many people from rural backgrounds are not accessing support services?" https://lnkd.in/eSAqPRas #RuralHealth #RuralHealthCareers #RuralCommunities #FarmerHealth #CancerCare #NorthernIreland #RuralEurope #RR2H #Podcast #WHOFides
