FENIX Project EU’s Post

Meet the FENIX Project EU Consortium Coordinator: UGR’s Role in Advancing Soil Science The University of Granada (UGR) is nestled in the historic city of Granada, Spain. This prestigious institution traces its beginnings to the Nasrid dynasty, officially starting in 1531 under Emperor Charles V. As Granada grew, so did UGR, spreading its influence within the city and extending to North Africa with campuses in Ceuta and Melilla. Today, it is one of Spain’s best universities, home to about 70,000 students, researchers, and staff, making it the country's fourth largest. University of Granada plays a key role in coordinating FENIX Project EU project. The Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, part of the Faculties of Sciences and Pharmacy, has more than 40 years of academic and research activity. The Department's lecturers teach 15 undergraduate and seven master's degree courses to more than 600 students a year. It is made up of three research groups covering the main lines of research in Soil Science. It has an active role in obtaining funding through national and international projects and a very intense activity in relation to scientific publications in high impact journals and the dissemination of its research results. In Project FENIX, UGR is spearheading its effort as project coordinator and leader of Ethics Requirements. Additionally, they also lead Work Package 4, which aims to assess soil improvers’ formulas for their safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This work involves collecting soil samples from Greece, France, and Spain to test the selected mixtures on five different soil types to see how they perform in actual field conditions. UGR focuses on monitoring and quantifying the benefits of the soil improvers in contrasted soil types and climatic conditions. Special attention is given to observing how they can change biological properties and in the modelling of carbon balance in soil, crucial for understanding how these improvers can help in the mitigation of global warming. An indispensable leader in this mission, UGR’s contribution to FENIX project is set to make significant improvements in agricultural practices and soil health over the next four years. #FENIXProject #UGR #Sustainable #SoilMission #Innovation #SoilHealth #EUMissions
