December 17 is the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers, a day created to call attention to the hate crimes and abuse faced by sex workers. On this day, we bring awareness to the anti-trans hate faced by sex workers, especially Black sex workers, trans sex workers and migrant sex workers, who are further marginalized and vulnerable due to compound oppression. Today and everyday, we honour, we remember, and we advocate loudly for the basic rights of sex workers to have safe, secure work environments. • • • #projectagape #projectagapeca #internationaldaytoendviolenceagainstsexworkers #advocacy

With sex work still criminalised in the country, efforts to decriminalise the trade were most welcome with a two-pronged amendment of the Sexual Offenses Act which criminalises sex work. Today Sisonke, SWEAT, Asijiki took to contribute to the regulations of the trade to align the proposed Bill which is with the State Law Advisor for review by consulting with sex workers in Limpopo. This consultation is one of nine among sex workers in the country before consolidating all responses and presenting to the country’s Department of Justice and Correctional Services for further deliberation. The said Bill presented to the country for comment in December 2022 proposed existing sex work-related criminal records of individuals be expunged and that adults willing to buy or sell sex be permitted. #humanrights #equality #decriminalizesexwork

Earlier this month, it was Sex Worker Pride Day. There are many reasons why people (both men and women) engage in sex work. For most - it is by choice or circumstance. And for others - it is by coercion. Human trafficking and sex trafficking will always remain illegal; however, decriminalizing sex work is the best way to ensure everyone's safety - even those who enter the industry by force. #Police are sex workers largest perpetrators of abuse - making it hard to seek help - even for those who are there by coercion. Did you know that in order to access services for victims of sex trafficking - survivors must be cooperating with law enforcement? As an #InternationalPsychologist, I conducted research in #Holland on the attitudes and values of those who stigmatize sex workers (https://lnkd.in/eYRzpEuy). What I learned was that sex workers need rights not rescue! And at the end of the day, #SexWorkIsWork and #StigmaKills. #SexWorkerPrideDay2024 #DecrimNow #RightsNotRescue

As a result of the criminalisation of the sex work trade, sex work can be among the most unsafe trades. The call to decriminalise sex work is a means to mediate the atrocities experienced by sex workers. Your insights in paving the way to decriminalising sex and ensuring human rights rights could save a life. Slide into our DMs and gain access to this thought provoking discussion facilitated by Sisonke National Movement and the African Sex Worker Alliance (ASWA) on the sex workers' access to social protection. DID YOU KNOW? Sex workers are complacent to report criminal activity and human rights violations against them as a result of criminalisation and that often the perpetrator is a police official. #sexworkerslivesmatter #decriminalisesexwork

Sex work is work!!! The sex work industry makes a significant albeit unrecognised contribution to the Gross Domestic Product of Uganda. Criminalising sex work is tantamount to discrimination on the basis of work, gender--a violation of Article 21 of the Ugandan Constitution. It is time to draw sex workers out of the shadows and do away with any laws such as the Sexual Offenses Bill 2024 which violate the constitution by creating room to infringe on the labour rights of sex workers. #RejectTheSexualOffenseBill2024 #Stop_SOB2024

Today, 17 December, is International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. This day is important as sex workers face many forms of violence, which often remains unpunished. The protection of their rights, investigating and prosecuting all violent offences against anyone working in the sex sector is hard to put into practise if sex work itself is considered as violence against women and thus criminalised. Read more about sex workers rights and updates surrounding the topic in 2024 on our website: https://lnkd.in/djdxC_vS
