🤝 Last week, at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), world leaders adopted a new political declaration emphasizing the role of existing institutions and global partnerships—such as The Global Fund. By working together with international financing organizations like the Global Fund, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, USAID, Stop TB Partnership, Unitaid and others, we can expand access to effective antimicrobials, diagnostics and infection prevention measures—critical to combating the threat of #AMR. Centuries after the legendary Trojan War, UC researchers have drawn on one of the Greeks' most famous battle ploys to lay siege to the Hepatitis B virus - creating an assessment model that encodes the HBV genome like a viral Trojan horse. “One of the things we don’t yet understand is why some people get an acute Hepatitis B infection – which their immune system then clears, so that they recover – while others suffer from the chronic variety,” says Associate Professor xiaonan zhang. This stemmed from the lack of a model which could replicate both chronic and recovery situations. The model from Xiaonan and his team overcomes this challenge – it can replicate chronic infection and recovery scenarios. They're using it to help develop a cure, while also furthering a fundamental understanding of HBV infection. With 300 million people worldwide chronically infected with the Hepatitis B virus – and one million people dying from it every year – a cure can't come soon enough.
