In #PROMISCES, many #youngresearchers are working in a wide variety of fields. But one thing they have in common: To enable a #circulareconomy in the soil-sediment-water system and to fight #PFAS. 👩🔬 One of them is Alicia Cano López. She is a pre-doctoral researcher in the field of Environmental Analytical Chemistry at Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC). What excites her the most about the work in PROMISCES is the potential to contribute to significant environmental improvements and to provide solutions that can enhance the well-being of communities around the world. Read more about Alicia and her thoughts on PFAS in #reused #water in our interview! 👉 https://lnkd.in/dTB9pvN5 #zeropollution

We are glad to share our latest paper, "Novel extraction methods and compound-specific isotope analysis of methoxychlor in environmental water and aquifer slurry samples" now available as open access in Science of the Total Environment: https://lnkd.in/e855ExW7 The study presents the first multi-element compound-specific isotope (δ13C and δ37Cl -CSIA) measurements of methoxychlor at environmentally relevant concentrations in water and slurry samples. The research also provided promising outcomes from polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) tests. Our work represents a significant initial stride towards assessing isotope ratios related to the insecticide methoxychlor in environmental samples. This achievement is a result of the fruitful collaboration among MAiMA (Martí Vinyes Nadal, Clara Torrentó, and Neus Otero), the Institut Terre et Environnement de Strasbourg (Jeremy Masbou and Gwenaël Imfeld), and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) (Steffen Kümmel and Matthias Gehre). #research #environment #isotopes

As part of my ongoing Ph.D. research in Environmental Economics, I'm diving deep into the various factors that influence the costs associated with responding to and remediating oil spills. Understanding these elements is crucial for developing effective cost models that not only optimize resources but also minimize environmental damage. Here are some of the key factors that significantly impact the cost: 1️⃣ Type and Quantity of Oil Spilled: Heavier, more viscous oils are harder to clean up, while larger spills naturally demand more resources. 2️⃣ Geographic Location and Environmental Sensitivity: Remote locations or fragile ecosystems (such as wetlands or coral reefs) increase costs due to logistical challenges and the need for more specialized responses. 3️⃣ Extent and Duration of the Spill: The longer a spill remains unaddressed, the wider it spreads, affecting more areas and requiring more extensive clean-up efforts. 4️⃣ Response Strategy and Resources Deployed: The choice of response method (mechanical recovery, dispersants, in-situ burning) and the scale of personnel and equipment involved also have a major influence on costs. Understanding and managing these variables is essential not just for controlling financial outlays but for ensuring effective environmental stewardship. I am interested in hearing from experts and professionals in the field: What do you think are the most significant cost drivers in oil spill response and remediation? Looking forward to your insights and discussions! #EnvironmentalEconomics #OilSpillRemediation #Sustainability #CostOptimization #PhDResearch #EnvironmentalImpact #CleanEnergy

I am thrilled to share that I am among the authors of a paper titled "Microplastics from Different Viewpoints.", published by National Water Research Institute (NWRI). This valuable work is the result of collaborative efforts from two workshops held in Southern and Northern California, bringing together insights from regulators, facilities, and academics. It is an honor to contribute to such an important topic and work with an incredible team of experts. This book focuses on advances in environmental research. Chapter 1 delves into the intertwined realms of e-waste, the cyclical economy, and their profound impact on economic development. Chapter 2 analyzes the critical discourse of environmental justice and equity, shedding light on the intersectionality between social disparities and environmental degradation. Chapter 3 aims to succinctly compile a mini review of trace elements loads on outdoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in South African urban settings. Chapter 4 exposes the concept of sustainable management in ecological economics. Chapter 5 focuses on the environmental effects of spills from the transportation of petroleum products. In Chapter 6, different aspects of the environmental chemistry of ultra trace elements, such as scandium, rare earth elements, hafnium, and tantalum, are described. Chapter 7 describes a novel technique of obtaining nanocarbon-polymer composition (NCPC) on the basis of nano -carbon colloids (NCC) and polyethylenimine (PEI) and the process of NCPC synthesis and its chemical characteristics. Finally, Chapter 8 sets out to comprehensively map the scientific research on studies employing the Weibull Distribution in the field of renewable energy. https://lnkd.in/eFjQ3xXb #newbook #environment #research #environmentalscience
