Thailand has recently proposed a Schengen style visa system in Southeast Asia, representing a significant shift in the region's approach to toursim. This aims to simplify travel across Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam offering an unified visa. The proposal is designed to replicate the seamless travel experience in Schengen Area, which has been highly successful in facilitating travel and boosting economic ties. The initiative could make the region more accessible to long haul travellers, particularly those interested in wellness tourism. For Indians, this has limited impact given we already enjoy significant travel privileges in these countries, including visa exemptions, visa-on-arrival and e-visa options. Though this does raise concerns with regards to potential overtourism, an already growing issue in popular destinations. While travel to destinations such as Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan has surged due to newly introduced visa-free travel for Chinese tourists, this growth offers a glimpse into the evolving landscape of Chinese outbound travel. Comprehensive analysis shows that visa policies continue to significantly influence travel trends. Popular destinations like Europe and the United States are on a steady path to recovery, despite the challenges posed by complex visa procedures, reduced flight frequencies, and higher travel costs. Additionally, the market is gradually improving in tandem with China's economic recovery. Encouragingly, the Chinese outbound travel market shows promising signs of revival. A particularly interesting trend is the high occupancy of business class seats on many flights, even when economy class is not fully booked.
