HOW TO USE PRONATURE OIL FINISHES? "If there is one single area in woodworking that could be prone to becoming a minefield it would be finishes. Opinions vary about the best products out there and if you happen to have a dozen or so woodworkers in the room and ask them about their preferred finish, you would likely get 12 different answers and I dare say possibly more opinions than the number of people in the room!" Grout is a critical component of tile installation that affects both the aesthetic appeal and durability of tiled surfaces. In addition, the choice of grout can significantly enhance environmental responsibility and resource efficiency. Traditionally, grout is made from a mixture of cement, sand, and water. By choosing products that resist mold and mildew, installers can extend the lifespan of both the grout and the tiles, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Additionally, selecting grout colors that match natural tones can lessen the use of synthetic dyes, promoting a more environmentally friendly approach. Eco-friendly grout options are increasingly available, and many are specifically designed to meet or exceed the standards outlined in the Green Seal Standard for Adhesives and Sealants (GS-36). This standard evaluates products based on their environmental impact, particularly focusing on VOC emissions. By choosing these eco-conscious materials, installers can enhance indoor air quality and play a significant role in advancing sustainable practices. When drying wood for indoor woodworking applications, the higher the starting moisture content, the longer the drying process will take. But moisture content isn't the only factor. Other factors to consider are things like if it's a hardwood or a softwood, how thick the boards are, what type of drying process you are using, etc.... Next ➡ Transforming Timber into Essential Products 🌲 Once sawlogs reach the mill, they're processed into a wide range of solid wood products that form the backbone of construction and manufacturing: 🪚 Lumber, Timbers, Plywood, and Veneers are crafted from high-quality sawlogs, becoming essential materials for construction, furniture, and shipping. 🏠 Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is an engineered wood panel made from wood flakes, bonded under pressure. It's a key material in construction, used for walls, flooring, and roof decking. ♻️ By-Products are created during the milling process, such as sawdust, chips, and bark. These are not wasted—they're repurposed for papermaking, engineered wood products, biomass energy, and even landscaping. 🏗️ In Secondary Manufacturing, milled boards are turned into ready-to-use consumer products like furniture, pallets, wood trusses, and flooring, completing the journey from forest to finished product. Not only do we ensure that the timber that we select is FSC ® certified 🌳🌲, we only procure timber species that we are confident will allow us to manufacture premium, high performance timber windows and doors. The types of timber we offer are: -Engineered Redwood - perfect for products requiring a paint finish because the reduced moisture uptake and increased stability of the timber produces a substrate which enhances the coating’s life span. -European Oak - a very strong, durable hardwood that benefits from an attractive grain and colour. -Accoya - this timber has earned the highest durability rating of any timber. It is our timber of choice in the manufacture of external profiles because it provides a durable, stable base for our advanced paint system. -Grandis Hardwood - this timber provides a stable and durable substrate and is supplied as three ply laminated material for extra stability. Wait, WHAT?! Timber is generally divided into three categories, sawn timber, veneer, and pulpwood. Pulpwood is the lowest-grade product among the three, and in most cases, it is the most abundant product in the forest. In fact, in Australia and many other countries, it is common for nearly HALF of all trees in a forest to go towards pulp uses. (source: FAOSTAT) Trees that are too small for sawn timber gets classified as pulp automatically. Even mature, high-value trees are often sold as pulpwood if their quality is too undesirable. For example, a tree with too many holes, knots and limbs will be unusable for saw timber but will qualify as pulpwood. These trees would traditionally head straight to the wood chipper. Whilst they may be low-value to others, to us, they have so much potential. We have the technology to divert them from ending up in a woodchips pile and turn them instead into beautiful solid hardwood timbers, giving them a new life with unsurpassed value-add. Every expert was once a beginner. My first mortise joints, first veneer, and first use of Oldies oil. Made from recycled wood leftovers. Shelf is plywood as I ran out of the wood boards. 😁 #woodworking #recycled #sustainability #lifelonglearner
