🎶 MUSIC OF THE WEEK: Childish Gambino – "This Is America" What do guns, viral dances, and chaos have in common? In Childish Gambino's "This Is America," they all make a powerful statement about systemic racism, gun violence, and the complexities of modern entertainment. Released in 2018, the song sparked not only praise for its genre-blending sound but also controversy for its bold social commentary. With an addictive rhythm that grabs your attention, the shocking visuals force us to confront the harsh realities often hidden behind entertainment. 🎧 The Meaning Behind the Music: In the video, guns are handled with care, wrapped gently in cloth, while human lives are discarded without thought. This reflects America’s obsession with guns over people’s lives and references the mass shootings and violence that have become disturbingly normalised. Gambino suddenly shoots a Black man and guns down a gospel choir, reflecting the senseless and persistent violence inflicted on Black communities. This scene evokes real-life tragedies, such as the Charleston church shooting. Amid the chaos, Gambino and schoolchildren dance with joy, symbolising how viral trends and pop culture distract from deeper societal issues. The upbeat vibe masks the suffering, much like how the media diverts attention from real problems with entertainment. Gambino’s erratic dance movements (read: Jim Crow) reflect the emotional complexity of Black identity; a balancing act between joy and fear in a world that celebrates Black culture while failing to protect Black lives. In the final scene, Gambino is chased down a dark hallway, symbolising the never-ending struggle for survival in America, especially for those living in marginalised communities 🎯 Why This Matters: "This Is America" holds a mirror to society, asking uncomfortable questions: Are we so distracted by entertainment that we no longer see the chaos around us? This message applies not only to art but also to business and life. Much like propaganda, distractions often conceal uncomfortable truths. True success; whether in media, leadership, or campaigns, requires looking beyond surface-level narratives to confront reality. 🎬 Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/dbP8WiSW and let me know your thoughts. 👉 What other songs have made you stop and reflect recently? Per Film Clip: This is in the flow. FLOW - You have shown me what you consider to be 'grace' (Mary). Now, I have shown you what I consider to be 'grace' (Susan Parrish; (looks like) Pandora at the party on Saturday came to sit at my table. There was a no show and Pandora was a late arrival.). Rebuttal: Grace without prayer, is Grace without merit. In this film, Susan Parrish's father dies. Therefore, the flow implies that Pandora's father will die soon. According to the film, Death (4) stays at the 'Parrish' house (Parish) until the father dies. (This Sunday's Second Reading: "... let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.) The difference between Mary and Pandora: Mary has grace, but she also has an edge of judgement. Pandora has a softer quieter grace without an edge. To be able to compare the two, is a subtle eye opener from which I've gained valuable insight.

Really interesting to see the way people, organisations and institutions invoke anti-racism and black intellect when they want to maintain incompetence. They are way less interested in black intellect and anti-racism when it doesn’t serve their purposes. Way less interested when black students are being failed daily on our campuses because of racism. Even more interesting are the black colleagues who allow themselves to be used with the view that they are being represented. They don’t care on any other day. Why would they care today? Where ARE they when black women are being silenced in the workplace, making complaints, and getting terminated? Where are they when black staff are getting ignored every possible way for academic promotion? Where are they when black staff report bullying and racialised discrimination in the workplace and said black staff had to leave? Being anti-racist isn’t always inclusive… “You really wanna know?) Regarding last night's #PresidentialDebate2024, I believe this is an ideal moment to share one of my favourite videos - #LaurieAnderson's 2010 "Another Day in America." Anderson, a pioneer in experimenting with technology, used a vocoder to make her spoken or sung words sound as if they are also being sung by an instrument, creating an eerie 'voice of authority'. The closing question in the clip, "How do we begin again?" resonates with prescience and foreboding, suggesting that the American Dream is swiftly fading for many. It's truly worth a listen. Anderson's #creative work, often described as #avantgarde, represents cerebral rock at its finest. A human kaleidoscope of thought-provoking ideas and concepts. The world desperately needs more artists like Anderson. My favourite quote from her is: Art is about paying attention. And we need to pay extra special attention to events in the months and years ahead. #art #music #usa #concepts #creativity #prescience

https://lnkd.in/ezSQf9mf **Available now on bandcamp** Album Title Post-Orientalism Music Anthology Vol. 2: No To War by Various Artists https://lnkd.in/e2ch33AZ You can pre-order the full version in HD sound quality on the Bandcamp platform. === Post-Orientalism Statement "All of us are born into a catastrophe. The world is nothing but an endless waiting for the end." (Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot) "No to War" is not a whimsical slogan for us. This phrase is a bell that shatters solid walls and rouses the deaf from their deep slumber. "No to War" will commence with RDKPL and will be expanded weekly until the end of 2024. This collection will feature great thinkers and artists, each offering their interpretation of this outcry. This "No to War" is neither beautiful nor pleasing; we will not present it in a delightful package. It is a harsh and bitter truth—a raw scream that rejects all forms of sweetness and lays bare a bitter reality. We seek to transform a meaningless silence into a clear voice, etching a note upon the crumbling walls of war that cannot be ignored. In this endeavor, we return to a fundamental question: Can one say "no" in a world where war reigns, and will this "no" find its true meaning within itself? "Resistance is about building something that endures, even when everything is falling apart." (Alain Badiou) Post-Orientalism Community Sunday, October 6, 2024 === #NoToWar #PostOrientalism

This post picks up from my previous post where I shared a video featuring the last scene of Mad Men which fails to examine the inherent duality and contradictions within Don Draper’s character and society itself. In this video, the full version of the last scene of Mad Men is featured in which Don Draper’s character becomes inspired while sitting upon the hilltop meditating that he conceptualizes the aforementioned Coke Ad. The duality and contradictions juxtapose Don Draper’s sense of calm and peace on the hilltop with a frenzied capitalist system that is built on advertising. And while Don Draper’s Whiteness is reaffirmed through ads such as the one conceptualized upon that hilltop, the ad itself is paradoxical in its utopian vision of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion personified. Still, the question remains. With the current political and geopolitical climate, the atrocities that are happening in Gaza and Rafah, the climate crisis, all the ways in which we are divided based on race, religion, politics, gender, class and economic status, culturally, generationally, etc., could such an ad or commercial exist in our world today?
