The future belongs to the machines… In October 2015, Google revealed RankBrain, a machine learning algorithm that had probably been running since at least spring of that year. This represented a philosophical shift within Google from a historically strong reliance on human-vetted rules/heuristics. A lot has happened since then, and Google has at least three core deep-learning components in play: RankBrain, DeepRank, and RankEmbed. In spring of 2023, Google launched the Search Generative Experience (SGE), built on Bard (recently rebranded to Gemini). SGE uses Large Language Models (LLMs) to try to answer natural-language queries by combining information from multiple websites. ~ Dr. Peter J. Meyers via Moz

Concerns about factual inaccuracies are just the beginning of the worries about Google's move. There's also the broader — and probably far larger — issue of what the change will mean for those who make their business publishing information on the web. Gartner forecasts a 25% decline in search engine volume by 2026, while many publishers anticipate an even sharper decline in the traffic they get from Google and other search engines. https://lnkd.in/exC2CHdD

Lots of developments coming from Google’s I/O conference this week, all centering on AI of course. One of the most immediate updates is the roll-out of Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) that will launch across the USA this week. You may have already noticed AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search result pages (SERPs). These AI overviews occupy prime screen real estate and could satisfy some users’ needs for answers while burying traditional “blue link” web results, potentially limiting clickthrough rates. What does that mean if you rely on search traffic to your website for leads or sales? Time to evolve your SEO and/or SEM practice. https://lnkd.in/dpFFVZJU

Perplexity Raises the Search Bar. Perplexity has taken a step towards challenging Google's dominance in the search engine market. The company has introduced new features that display direct results for factual queries such as weather, time, currency conversion and simple math calculations. Previously, Perplexity could fetch this data descriptively, but the new update adds visual prominence through card-based results, allowing users to access the information more quickly. This move aligns with the trend set by Google, which also displays direct results for basic queries. Perplexity's CEO, Aravind Srinivas, emphasized that these fundamental queries should now work faster on their platform. The introduction of these new features comes amidst ongoing discussions about the impact of AI-powered search engines on traditional media businesses. Perplexity faced criticism for displaying original media content without proper attribution, raising concerns about the potential impact on publications' business models. In response, the company's chief business officer, Dmitry Shevelenko, mentioned that Perplexity is exploring revenue-sharing deals with publishers to address these concerns and provide recurring income to support their operations. #SearchEngine #TechNews #AI #Perplexity #Google

Is Google killing its golden goose? Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) offers AI generated answers to search queries in Google search. It has been released last year and kept improving over time. The issue is as it exposes content from the websites it’s using the data to train with, people don’t click on the source link anymore. And clicks generates traffic that brings money to these websites (and ads revenue to Google as well). So if these blogs and websites don’t survive, what will be left as body of knowledge to train the AI to generate these answers…? And why should Google be the only one making money in the process? At the same time, if creator’s content can easily be replaced by AI, isn’t there an opportunity for creators to focus on what AI won’t be good at? If so, what is it? Happy reading! #genai #ethicalai #innovation #tech __________________ P.S. for more of these check out ‼️ https://koncentrik.co ‼️, THE newsletter you need to follow Technology-led Innovations. This is why you use Google every day👇 One day, Larry Page once met with the CEO of Excite. Excite was the #2 search engine behind Yahoo at that time. They were comparing Google search results with Excite. But Google’s results were clearly better. So, Excite's CEO was trying to defend his product: “If you typed the query this way, it would’ve worked.” But Larry believed different. He believed a search engine should give high-quality answers no matter what the user typed: “You do all the magic behind the scenes so that even if the user was lazy, even if there were typos… they still got the answer and they love the product.” Today, Google dominates search. And most people have never heard of Excite. —— Aravind Srinivas founder of Perplexity. He believes the best AI products will adopt this same philosophy. And that “Prompt Engineering” won’t be a long-term thing. One fun fact 🤭 Now Perplexity wants to beat Google with the same philosophy. I don’t know what about the future. But Perplexity is really a great product. ---- ♻️ Repost this if you like it, thanks.

If you haven't seen "AI Overview" in Google search results yet, be aware that Google's approach to AI is here. This was previously dubbed Search Generative Experience (SGE) and is now being called AI Overview, which aims to answer users' questions directly in search. This already has several SEOs and content creators upset. Keeping users directly on the Google search result page reduces websites' potential for organic traffic. This also means Google uses publishers' content without providing proper credit or rewarding the content with traffic. What do you think about Google's AI Overview? Quick note about something related to the world’s ongoing discussions of AI and how it might affect, or already be affecting, us and, well, everything. Yesterday I noticed a number of AI-generated articles on various online news sites about time changes—a few I read noted the change had happened overnight or would happen that night. I took little notice except to double-check the date. The time change always happens on the first weekend in November. I am not sure why the AI-generated articles got it wrong, but I did notice the error popped up on several popular news websites. I thought no more about it until this afternoon when I got my daily Google Trends report and one of today’s highlights is a big spike in online searches for information related to time change including “did time change last night,” https://lnkd.in/exY_HPC7 Huh. I don’t have any idea if the incorrect articles were corrected or removed, but I do wonder how much time and attention was diverted/expended because the AI-based content generators got this wrong, at least initially.
