Verizon Business's latest #DBIR noted minimal #GenAI impacts in cyberattacks up to October 2023. But any take that says something to the effect of, "The DBIR proves that genAI isn't a major threat," is totally missing the point. Here's why: First, the DBIR's reporting period covers when the GenAI market was worth $40 billion. Today, it's soared to $137 billion. By 2032, it's projected to reach $1.3 trillion. This growth rate underscores a critical point: technology evolves faster than our standard reporting cycles. GenAI is rapidly becoming more powerful, more accessible, and more exploitable — and threat actors are taking note. In February, attackers used live deepfake video to steal $25 million from a multinational design and engineering company. In April, LastPass reported that they thwarted an attack on an employee that used deepfake audio. Just this week, the CEO of the world's biggest advertising firm was targeted by a deepfake attack.
