Last week, IPES-Food launched the #FoodFromSomewhere report highlighting the importance of resilient territorial markets. I spoke to 8.9ha 's
ffinlo Costain about the importance of these local food chains and markets giving an African perspective.
Territorial markets can be local, national, or transboundary, and they can exist in rural, peri-urban, or urban areas. These markets are bounded which means directly linked to local, national, and regional food systems. They are diverse, featuring a wide variety of agricultural and local food products in the marketplace. Holistic in nature, they perform multiple economic, social, cultural, and ecological functions. These markets are highly remunerative, being the most profitable for smallholders. Legally, they have varying degrees of links with relevant public bodies and the State. They operate according to commonly shared rules that are negotiated between producers, consumers, and different authorities, making them embedded within their systems. They are circular, ensuring that wealth created is retained and redistributed within the territory. Lastly, they embody a solidarity economy, serving as places where political, social, and cultural relations are formed and expressed, with interactions characterized by interdependence and solidarity.
Territorial markets and food chains play a vital role globally by providing accessible, diverse, and healthy food, essential for addressing health crises. They offer significant economic and social benefits by supporting livelihoods, providing stable incomes, and empowering individuals with autonomy. Global challenges such as pandemics and conflicts, like the Ukraine-Russia war, highlight the need for resilient markets. Market vulnerability and resilience must be analyzed to ensure stability. Ensuring equity, reducing ultra-processed food consumption, and promoting agroecological systems are vital for a sustainable food system.
Policies from international organizations can have mixed impacts, often requiring careful consideration of local producers. Addressing issues like decreased food security, environmental degradation, and the climate crisis is crucial for a sustainable future. Read the full report here 👉 https://lnkd.in/djxAFvi5
