Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced these changes in her Budget speech earlier this year. Here's a summary of the key updates: 1. Modified Tax Slabs: - The new tax regime simplifies tax planning and encourages greater participation. Taxpayers can still choose the old regime if it benefits them. - Tax slabs for individual taxpayers: - Income from ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh: 5% - ₹6 lakh to ₹9 lakh: 10% - ₹9 lakh to ₹12 lakh: 15% - ₹12 lakh to ₹15 lakh: 20% - Above ₹15 lakh: 30% 2. Standard Deduction: - The standard deduction of ₹50,000, previously applicable to the old tax regime, is now incorporated into the new regime. This reduces taxable income. 3. First know, what is Advance-Tax? 🤔 It's a system where you pay your taxes in instalments throughout the year. ↗ Pay taxes in instalments: Spread out payments across the year. ↗ Applicable if tax exceeds ₹10,000 annually: Mandatory for higher tax liabilities. ↗ Due dates: June 15, Sept 15, Dec 15, Mar 15. Hi Connections, As you all know that the new financial year has begun. Here is something you need to know.! New Income Tax Rules in India. 1. There will be a default adoption of the new tax regime which aims to streamline tax filing procedure and promote greater participation in the new regime. Although, taxpayers will still have liberty to stick to the old tax regime if it is more beneficial to them. 2. The tax slabs will be as follows: Income from 3 lakhs to 6 lakhs will be taxed at 5%, 6 lakhs to 9 lakhs will be taxed at 10% 9 lakhs to 12 lakhs will be taxed at 15% 12 lakhs to 15lakhs will taxed at 20% 15 lakhs and above will be taxed at 30% 3. Standard deduction of Rs.50,000, which was previously applicable to the old tax regime, has now been incorporated into the new tax regime. This will further decrease taxable income under the new regime. 4. The highest rate of surcharge of 37% on income above 5 crores has been reduced to 25%. 5. Maturity proceeds from life insurance policies, which are issued on or after April 1, 2023 where the total premium exceeds Rs 5 lakhs will be subject to taxation. 6. The leave encashment tax exemption limit for non-government employees was Rs 3 lakhs but it has now been increased to Rs 25 lakhs.

TDS Applicability: TDS is deducted on various payments such as: Salaries Interest payments (e.g., from banks) Rent Commission or brokerage Professional fees Contract payments Dividends Lottery winnings or games of chance. 3. TDS Rates: Rates vary based on the type of payment and recipient's status (individual, company, NRI, etc.). Common examples: Salary: As per income tax slabs. Interest on Fixed Deposits: 10%. Rent for property: 5% (if payment exceeds ₹2.4 lakh per annum). Professional fees: 10%. 4. TDS Payment and Filing: Deductor's Responsibility: The person/entity making the payment deducts TDS and deposits it with the government. TDS Return Filing: Quarterly returns must be filed (Forms 24Q, 26Q, 27Q, etc., based on the type of payment). TDS Certificate: The deductor issues a certificate (Form 16/16A) to the deductee as proof of TDS. 5. TDS on Salaries: Employers deduct TDS based on the employee's applicable tax slab after considering deductions and exemptions. 6. Claiming TDS Credits: Individuals can claim the TDS amount while filing their Income Tax Returns (ITR). The amount is adjusted against the total tax liability. 7. Non-compliance Penalties: Interest, late fees, and penalties may apply if TDS is not deducted, deposited, or returns are filed late.

Elections are round the corner and, looking back, a lot of well-thought out measures on direct taxes were implemented by the present government over the last 10 years. While I have been writing on income tax moves from a personal finance perspective all the time, this article looks at the same subject from a macro economic perspective and puts forth the hits and misses of the government. In my view, the hits include : Healthy personal tax collections, the good use of technology for improving compliance and moves to widen the tax base. The misses are : Weak corporate tax collections, slow adoption of the new tax regime and room for betterment on simplification of tax laws and taxpayer interactions.
