🌱To make sustainable food accessible by keeping prices affordable for everyone During a panel at Zenith Global Ltd's Vertical Farming World Congress, where the industry's challenges were discussed, Andreas Wilhelmsson, CEO and Co-founder of Ljusgårda, shared his insights on sustainable food production: "We have the fundamental belief that you cannot charge more for being sustainable lettuce or for the benefits it has." The panel highlighted the importance of being price-competitive to reach the mass market, and Ljusgårda has proven that sustainably grown products can compete both in terms of price and quality. This pricing is particularly unique for a vertically farmed lettuce, making Ljusgårda stand out in the market. Thank you to everyone for a great discussion! What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)? Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a model that connects farmers directly with consumers, fostering a partnership that benefits both. In a CSA, individuals or families purchase a share of the farm’s harvest in advance, which helps cover the farm’s operational costs. In return, they receive fresh, seasonal produce throughout the growing season. Why Choose CSA? 1. Freshness: Enjoy farm-fresh fruits and vegetables picked at their peak. 2. Local Support: Strengthen local economies by supporting small-scale farmers. 3. Sustainability: Reduce your carbon footprint with locally grown produce and minimal packaging. How Does It Work? 1. Subscription: Purchase a share or subscription from a local farm. 2. Harvest: Receive weekly or bi-weekly deliveries of produce. 3. Community: Engage with the farm through events and updates. CSA models can vary, including options for vegetables, fruits, dairy, and even meat. It's a great way to ensure you’re eating nutritious, locally sourced food while supporting sustainable farming practices. Want to see how CSA is part of our self-sustainable city project? Check out our blog article to learn more about how we're integrating CSA principles into our community. 🌿 #CommunitySupportedAgriculture #CSA #FarmToTable #SustainableLiving #LocalFarming #EcoFriendly #SelfSustainableCity #SeasonalProduce https://lnkd.in/ggT47syX

SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION: HARNESSING DATA CENTRE HEAT FOR LOBSTER FARMING. Lobsters are not only prized for their delicious taste but also for their nutritional benefits, containing selenium and omega-3 fatty acids that can help combat thyroid disease, depression and anemia. However, overfishing has threatened their natural populations, prompting the need for alternative methods of cultivation. Traditional lobster farming faces significant challenges. These crustaceans require relatively warm seawater, around 20°C (68°F) and must be reared individually to prevent cannibalism. This labour and energy intensive process has made lobster farming economically unfeasible. One innovative solution to this challenge is the co-location of a data centre and lobster farm. By utilizing waste heat generated by the data centre, the lobster farm can maintain a consistent water temperature conducive to rapid lobster growth. The data centre takes in seawater at 8°C (46.4°F) and releases it at 20°C, providing an ideal environment for lobster farming throughout the year. This sustainable approach not only reduces the operational costs of the lobster farm by 15%, as it no longer needs to heat water, but also decreases its environmental footprint by utilizing waste heat from the data center. Furthermore, the reliability and consistency of the heat generated by the data center ensure a stable environment for lobster cultivation, allowing for more efficient and predictable farming practices. By creatively repurposing waste heat from data centre, this innovative solution demonstrates the potential for sustainable agriculture practices to address both environmental and economic challenges in the seafood industry. Chivas Brothers toasts new #sustainableagriculture programme. Pilot programme aims to support #sustainablefarming practices among Scottish #barley growers Scotch whisky producer Chivas Brothers has announced it has launched a pilot programme dedicated to supporting more sustainable farming practices among Scottish barely growers as part of efforts to reduce the #carbonfootprint of the industry. The pilot programme was announced late last week and is a collaboration between Chivas Brothers, Bairds Malt Limited , and agricultural merchant Scotgrain Agriculture Ltd. The partners said the programme has been established with a view to working collaboratively to facilitate the continuous improvement of farms' sustainability efforts, so as to help future-proof the livelihoods of farmers. They said the programme was also designed to help secure the supply of barely - a critical ingredient in the whisky making progress - and reduce Chivas Brothers' indirect carbon footprint. The whisky producer estimated roughly a third of its carbon footprint comes from the growing and processing of its agricultural raw materials, including the manufacturing of #fertiliser, production of barley, and malting. The pilot programme - which has been called 'the Dalmunach Growers Pilot Group' - will run over a three to five year period and is initially comprised of eight farmers who have voluntarily chosen to take part in the first on-farm trials. The trials will see farmers embrace a range of approaches to improving soil health, optimising fertiliser use, undertaking, cover-cropping, and developing wildflower strips around fields, among other measures designed to boost biodiversity, enhance climate resilience, and enhance natural carbon sinks.. Ronald Daalmans, environmental sustainability manager at Chivas Brothers, said establishing the partnerships with growers represents a "critical moment" in the company's sustainability journey. "The ongoing impact of climate change means our growers are having to adapt their practices - and many are faced with tough decisions regarding sustainable practices because it is cost prohibitive to implement new techniques without certainty of how they'll affect crops through the growing cycle," he added. "Working together makes us stronger - not only to reduce carbon emissions at pace, but also to provide invaluable insights that can benefit the farming community at large." https://lnkd.in/d2HEPma5
