Defending #HumanRights is inherently a collective practice. #HRDs act both individually and as a group. Therefore, protection should also be collective. On #HumanRightsDay2024, we want to announce that our paper on #CollectiveProtection is now also available in Spanish, French and Russian. Help us spread the word and stand for the right to defend human rights! https://lnkd.in/gehnvNkT

📢 Exciting news! Protection International is thrilled to announce its newest publication on collective protection. Defending human rights is inherently a collective practice. Human rights defenders act both individually and as a group. Therefore, protection should also be collective. However, existing protection mechanisms often focus on individual HRDs, potentially overlooking contextual factors and relationships in which HRDs are immersed. In our latest paper, we delve into the key elements of collective protection, both as a concept and as a practical approach. Here's what you can expect: ✅ We explain why a collective approach to protection is important; ✅ We define collective protection and the key concepts linked to it; ✅ We present practical examples and outcomes of implementing a collective approach to protection of HRDs and their collectives. Our Collective Protection Paper also provides key recommendations to HRDs, authorities and other stakeholders involved in ensuring the security of HRDs and their right to defend human rights. If you believe your rights have been violated, there are several avenues for making complaints, both locally (within your country) and internationally. The specific steps can depend on the nature of the rights violated and your location, but here’s a general guide to get you started: Locally: 1. National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs): Most countries have a national human rights institution or ombudsman that can investigate complaints about rights violations. Look up “[Your Country] Human Rights Commission” or “[Your Country] Ombudsman” for the appropriate contact information. Internationally: 1. United Nations (UN): • Human Rights Council (HRC): The HRC has a complaint procedure for consistent patterns of gross human rights violations. https://lnkd.in/e5CeVYZt

A huge thank you to OHCHR and the Global Strategic Litigation Council for organizing today's fantastic training session on utilizing UN Treaty Bodies to advance the human rights of people on the move. 🌍 The session deepened our understanding of the individual communications procedure of the UN human rights treaty bodies and highlighted its immense value in strategic litigation. Key takeaways included: 1️⃣ Strengthening our understanding of the individual communications procedure of UN human rights treaty bodies and its added value. 2️⃣ Leveraging treaty bodies to foster impactful jurisprudence on human rights protections for displaced individuals. 3️⃣ Real-world applications and cases (including Canadian jurisprudence!) showcasing the prohibition of refoulement as a cornerstone of human rights protections against return. This session was a powerful reminder of the role we can play as advocates to advance protections in domestic and international settings. #HumanRights #UN #RefugeeProtection #StrategicLitigation #TreatyBodies #NonRefoulement

Human Rights: A Pathway to a Better Future The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) stands as one of the most significant legal instruments in human history, serving as the cornerstone of international human rights law. As we observe Human Rights Day on December 10, 2024, it is crucial to examine the legal implications and continuing relevance of this foundational document in contemporary jurisprudence. Legal Foundation and Historical Context The UDHR, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on December 10, 1948, represents the first comprehensive international expression of fundamental human rights. While not technically binding law, the Declaration has achieved the status of customary international law through its widespread acceptance and incorporation into national constitutions and legal frameworks worldwide. read more @ #humanrights #betterfuture #significantlegallaws
