Some good news - advancements in battery recycling mean that an EV is increasingly better for our environment. There have always been concerns about the social and environmental impact of mining for the minerals needed for the batteries. Tool in the toolbox. Closed loop recycling of rare metals, especially platinum group metals, from catalytic converters, turbines and electronics using solvents. Mining rare metals is becoming increasingly difficult as they don't form concentrated ore bodies and the easy stuff is already mined and used and discarded. Need to get these end of life resources before sent to landfill. Without waste water and waste gases and without using lots of energy. https://lnkd.in/gKUq99dN

While batteries provide a solution, the essential metals needed for them often travel thousands of miles to reach manufacturing plants, resulting in high costs and unsustainability. The choice between mining new materials and recycling or urban mining is crucial to obtaining these critical minerals with a smaller carbon footprint. "When recycling isn't working in the free market, there is usually a cause. The amount of material or scale of collection may be too limited, or there may be a subsidy on virgin material (General Mining Act of 1872). The biggest problem is self-inflicted by environmentalists - regulations are more strict in proportion to property values, leading to stronger enforcement against lightly polluting industries (recycling, secondary smelting) and lax enforcement of heavily polluting industries (mining, primary smelting)." Fetishism by #2 is draining all the environmental capital. Both are a problem.
