Last Friday, we had the privilege of sharing our perspective with Globes גלובס Real-Estate Magazine on the untapped potential of #underground_spaces_in_urban_environments - focusing on the opportunities surrounding light rail stations in Israel. Here’s what we explored: • How can we integrate commercial spaces into the existing light rail stations and into the future metro hubs, without disrupting surrounding businesses? • What can we learn from countries like the Netherlands and Japan, which have successfully transformed subterranean areas into thriving ecosystems? • Why could underground theaters or museums become cultural landmarks, and how can we harness natural light to illuminate these spaces creatively? Architect Aynav Ziv, our Head of Design, highlights an emerging shift in perception: "Even NTA - Metropolitan Mass Transit System Ltd now recognizes the missed opportunity in excluding commercial spaces from underground train stations. They are already developing plans for tailored business solutions to fit each station." A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to interview Dominique Perrault (Dominique Perrault Architecture) for urbanNext about his latest book "A Village and Its Double" (Actar Publishers, 2024). It was truly fascinating diving into the thought process behind designing an Olympic village, especially when considering its long-term impact—the "day-after" phase. As Paris rapidly expands beyond its traditional boundaries, it is increasingly becoming a key European hub. Alongside major projects like Grand Paris, Perrault's vision sheds light on the socio-political complexities of designing an Olympic city—and its "double"—with an eye toward the future. In the interview, Perrault draws compelling parallels between the Barcelona Olympic Village of 1992 and the Paris 2024 Games, highlighting key lessons learned from past experiences. His approach blends historical insight with current needs and technologies, which are reshaping the way we think Olympic and Paralympic village planning. As he put it, his urban planning manual is an open book—one that invites readers to explore it non-linearly, from start to finish or wherever curiosity leads them.
